Some of you may remember several instances in the past when releases of very large scenery files caused a degradation in our usual speedy service. This is something that does not happen often so we really cannot afford to permantly upgrade our entire system to handle such loads when our day to day load is only a fraction of those peaks.
One option for dealing with such large files is "torrents". Essentially, this is a system where the user community shares the load. After you download the file you then become one of the sources for future people to download from. The load gets spread out among many people so downloads are fast and the people who are "seeding" the file are not greatly impacted.
Torrents have sort of a bad reputation since they are frequently associated with software piracy but there's nothing inherently wrong with the technology when used by the right people. With FlightSim.Com organizing and managing these torrents you can be sure they are safe.
What Do I Need To Use Torrents?
Your browser cannot do torrents directly so you will need a torrent client. For our server end we are using the qBittorrent server and there is also a qBittorrent client, which I am personally using on my own PC and which you can get here:
There are other torrent clients; you do not have to use this one if you prefer something else.
Torrent downloads will only be offered selectively, generally only on unusually large files which we expect to also be quite popular. To see if torrents are available, look for the "qB" icon by the file; it will look like this:

Just click on the "qB" icon to get the torrent file which you then load into your torrent client to start the torrent download.
Help Us Test
We'd like your help in testing this. Today, we've set up just one file that offers torrents. Please go to our file library and find this file:
Try downloading it with torrents and leave a comment below to let us know how it worked for you. Thanks for your help!
