Located in central Poland, Warsaw is this eastern European country's largest city and capital. With a city population of 1.7 million and metro population of 2.7 million, Warsaw is Europe's ninth largest city. Rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, it is a major tourist destination as well as a financial and commercial hub.
Most of the city is modern because 85 percent of it was destroyed during World War II and more was destroyed and rebuilt by the communist regime during the 1950s and 1960s. This historic city has been torn by war and conflict for most of its history. The phrase "Battle of Warsaw" applies to numerous battles, sieges, and uprisings since the mid 1600s, the worst of which occurred between 1939 and 1945.
Its climate is classified as humid continental with warm summers, cold winters, and ample precipitation. Record high temperature is 97.5F (36.4C) in July, and record low is -23F (-30.7C) in January. Standard time in Warsaw is Central European Time, which is Zulu +1, which is one hour ahead of London, England, and six hours ahead of New York. When it's 12:00 in the eastern United States, it's 18:00 Central European Time in Warsaw.
