• Review: Myrtle Beach Scenery

    The Scenery

As is obvious from the comparative screen shots, The Airport Guys offer considerably more scenery objects than seen in the FSX default scenery. Significant ground references such as major roads, a large shopping mall, an amusement park, two golf courses, and baseball fields near the airport are clearly viewable from aloft. This makes visual navigation around the airspace very easy, and it enlivens the simulation experience. The amusement park and shopping just outside the airport to the north and the Market Commons in the old airbase area appear remarkably realistic and accurate compared with real-world photos I found on the Internet. The hotels along the beach are represented with some realistic depictions mingled among what appear to be stock objects. Details such as street-light poles and the light they cast are more realistic than anything default FSX offers. I did not see animations such as vehicles moving on roadways outside the airport.

    The Airport

The airport depicted by The Airport Guys is true to the aerial photos and current airport diagrams I found on the Internet. The FSX depiction of ground movement areas is inaccurate or outdated. The Airport Guys show all significant buildings and facilities at the passenger terminal, the general-aviation area, and the old airbase. Most of the old military area is now civilian use as the Market Common shopping complex, and it is accurately depicted by The Airport Guys. Details such as grooves in the airport's concrete pavements and lawn-mowing trails on the airport's lawns, both of which are seen in my screen shots, make the scenery even more realistic. I did not see any static aircraft or people at the airport, and the Airport Guys do not advertise any.

    Night Effects

Dawn, dusk, and night effects are more realistic than FSX default and than many other add-on sceneries I have reviewed. Artificial lighting cast on buildings and ground surfaces is very realistic. Buildings are illuminated at night, but not as though they were translucent boxes lighted from inside. Airport lighting for taxiways, runways, and approaches is also realistic.

Does it require use of SP1 and SP2 for FSX or can it run without SP1 and SP2? The Airport Guys company said they will test it but so far I have not heard anything from them.

      Bill,

Thank you for the review of our scenery! The "custom cars" we were referring to are the static ones that we use in the parking lots. We do not currently have any animations in the scenery.

      Aharon,

The techniques we used are nothing out of the ordinary from the SDK that is supplied with FSX Deluxe. We have no reason to believe that it will not work without SP1/SP2.

      Thanks,

      Michael,

Good to know that KMYR scenery will not need SP1 and SP2 to work in FSX!!! You got yourself a customer!!!!

Why would you run FSX without SP1 & SP2?
Nearly all addons require this,so you are depriving yourself of a lot of addons!

The construction as far as the new passenger terminal and Harrelson Boulevard extension has been included, although it has been represented as it will be when finished, so you won't see cranes and dirt and construction equipment around. The newer General Aviation Terminal has been included as well. The War Bird Park is tucked away in the trees out of view from the airfield and as such was not included, but we may add it in at a future point in time.

In keeping with our design philosophy, a future update will include the Myrtle Beach International Technology & Aerospace Park as it becomes developed. As we recreate airports, we will keep in touch with real world development and update our sceneries accordingly.

      Michael or Jon..........
      Two questions.
      1. Will you ever have the jetways operational?
      2. I get a fair amount of ground scenery flashing at the gates. Have you had any other reports of that?

      My system is Win 7 (SP1)/64 bit, Intel core i7 2600k 3.4/3.7 GHz,16G Ram, N Vidia GeForce GTX 570

Hey Jack, we plan on making our scenery AES compatible in the near future, which will animate the jetways.

As for the ground flickering issues, we haven't had any reported, but I will PM you and hopefully we can get it sorted out!

Since I haven't heard from either of you here or on your forum for over a week and a half, I'll assume I won't be. I'll be removing the scenery from my system as the flickering is just too much.

Jack, I sent you a PM right after I responded on here. If you want to send me an email at jon@theairportguys.com, I can respond and we can get the issue sorted out. Also, we are working on upgrading our website so the forums are temporarily down. Apologies for the inconvenience.
