Textures in Microsoft Flight Simulator® are good, but not "as good as it gets." AFS Design has issued new textures for ground and sky for FSX, which updates from its textures for FS2004. Additionally, a bonus Airbus A380F is included.
World & Sky Textures
World & Sky 2 X by AFS Design features new textures for clouds, land, water, trees, and structures. AFS Design says: Colors are truer and details are sharper than default MSFS. Sunrise and sunset effects are enhanced. Unique weather for summer and winter are included. Water textures change based on sunshine, clouds, dusk, and night. Coastlines are more realistic. Highway and road textures are improved, with visible vehicles. Airports are enhanced with new details on runways and taxiways, better gates and hangars, and autogenerated grass textures. These enhancements are worldwide, not limited to any area.
AFS Design highlights these improved features of its World & Sky:
- Land, including farmlands, urban areas, and airports
- Waters, including oceans, bays, lakes, and rivers
- Skies, three major cloud types: cumulus, stratus, cirrus, and combinations of same
- Airports, runways, taxiways, aprons, and buildings
The comparative screen shots on this page show the differences between MSFS and AFS Design's textures.

I obtained these comparative screen shots from AFS Design because I thought making them myself would require more time than I have. This was because AFS Design's World and Sky Textures add files to the FSX textures and weather folders, and because deactivating them requires restoring the default FSX files. Later I made my own comparative screen shots, and it wasn't as time consuming as I expected.
