I don't believe it's closed for "remodeling". Looks like it's pretty much destroyed, IMO.

It is closing.. For security reasons. One government source said it was a permanent closure. See this website

well im sorry DARREL, but the news is constenly monitoring the WAR! it turns out meigs is shut down for good!
the chicago land area has no idea who authorized this! it is being looked in to by the City. but Meigs is being shipped to a pile of dirt and rock. hopefully meigs will remain in future microsoft flight simulators.

check out aopa.org. when it comes to any news GA related i trust them over just about anything else. They seem to imply the mayor prematurly closed it for some reason. Dunno, dont really wanna speculate, but check it out for yourself

YES! live in chicago, yes meigs is gone... Mayer Daily tore it down last nite @ 12am because he thinks that its a terrorist thing. Does the mayer know something that we dont? Hes closing it for good. I was just there on Friday. IM SAD :(

I can't wait for this to come back and bite the mayor in the #####. I can't believe he'd sink this low. He agreed to keep it open until 2026. This was just a legal way for him to go back on his word.

As for the comment of "Finally...a new start-up airport in FS....Change it if you don't like it. You can change the start up situation. Meigs was a great airport, and It's sad our government has to use a terrorist threat to blow a hole in General Aviation. Yay for the government. I guess you won this one....

I can just remember being downtown and watching the planes take off and land...park or no park, without meigs on that land Chicago will never be quite the same.

As far as Daley's bogus claims of a threat to security, if Meigs is a threat to Chicago then so is Midway, Palwaukee, DuPage, Schaumburg Regional, and O'Hare. Maybe Daley didn't quite think the logic through on this one?

Doing things like this is only letting terrorest win. I can remember sitting at a little resteraunt on a seawall like a 100 yards from meigs and watching planes fly in and out all day long.
One other thing is that i really dont know how their going to get all the planes out. especially since there are a few jets that are ussualy parked there???????

Well, Andrew, it's really not about the terrorists. Daley has been on an agenda against Meigs for a long time. I believe he wants to bulldoze it and turn it into a public park. Either way, the terror probability was simply a cause for Daley to close Meigs (if he had intended it based solely on the terror threat he probably would have closed it temporarily and not bulldozed the runway.

it's a real shame such a well-loved landmark has been defaced.

i don't know a thing about the mayor, but i'll bet there are a lot of people who aren't wishing him well right about now.

as far as getting the few planes that are left there out, anyone who's never taken off from a taxi-way raise your hand!! :-lol

yes, daley is a pain!!!!!!!!!!! but the aircraft are going to be put in a large cargo chopper (id like to see this happen), which i dont know what it is yet. yes it is planned to be a bublic park:-irks :-sleepy. at any rate i just saw a news confrence about this in chicago (with Daley) so this is where i got all this info.
