the first McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 is a? B/D Hornet or a F Super Hornet?
the second one is a F/A-18E Super Hornet

I guess the Hawkeye, hasn't gotten his upgrade to 6 bladed propellers yet...

Most kind Peter.. Camera is Sony F707, same one as Jeff S has.

Morgan, that Hawkeye was simply unbelievably loud.:-) It was over the far side of the airfield and you could still hear it as clear as ever, even when it went behind the trees as anyone that knows Farnborough will know the back taxiway to the new hangers and Tower.

Hey Francisco, I was looking for any visual clue in the first two shots, but didn't find any (I could be terribly wrong); can you tell me what gave it away for you to know, or were you live at the show...

thanks in advance

I think the front of the intake on the first picture gives it away (F/A-18F) The cover is straight edged but slanted (not recessed, vertical and curved as a A/B/C/D would have. Then the two cockpits (duh) make it an F.

I was trying to find a good picture of a D from a similar angle to show, but I can't. See the outline of the intakes in the shot included here? I have thoughfully outlined them in a garish and ugly color ;-).

F707, eh? I'll keep that name in mind. I've got a EOS RebelG that my gf let me use for a bit, but I don't have a clue how to use it. :-lol

Awesome pics.

Wow, I love that shot of the '18 just before the gear doors closed! Beautiful.

The E-2 is a loud sucker, you should hear it on the flight deck!

I was hoping you would know about the E-2 Jeff, and confirm what i said about the sound levels. I might add here that i did not find it annoying or dislike it, merely that it's a LOUD one.. :-)

Steve,
Just a guess, but I think it just might be the fact that big radome, and the engine's proximity to the fuselage and ground make the sound somewhat directional. Without that radome, the sound would disperse upward.

The "COD" which is basically the same aircraft, minus the radome does not seem as loud. But remember, those engines are basically the same ones as the C-130, which can make some noise too as you probably know!

Jeff, thats a very good point. I'm sure that could well be the reason for some of added 'Wow' factor in listening to it drone on miles away :-lol

I didn't know they were basically Herc engines, but now that you have said that it makes perfect sense as the sound was indeed very similar. Thankyou for enlightening me on that.

Philip..

Camera is Sony F707 dig. You can read a vey comprehensive review here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf707/
Airshow was at Farnborough on a trade day during the week. the main public display is at the weekend.

Those are some great shots. I was wondering if those are vapor trails coming off the left prop, or if it's just an odd camera illusion or something.
