Whilst flying from London, Gatwick to Athens in the 737 over the Alps, I encountered what could be described as clear air turbulence, gaining and losing altitude in the blink of an eye.

ATC pops up and says 'Speed Bird 496, you are 600 below your assigned altitude. Descend and maintain FL250 resume own navigation.'

Has any one else had strange instructions like this?

I have a question..if you are 600 feet below altitude (24,400 ft)why does ATC tell you to descend to FL250???

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-02 AT 07:48AM (EDT)[p]That's exactly my point.

I've also heard 'Money descend and maintain FL230. And expect vectors to the ILS ...'
