PILOT REPORT - KETCHIKAN TO PETERSBURG
PATK - PAPG (ALASKA)

http://home.earthlink.net/~snyders2000/piper.jpg[HR COLOR="#ffffff"][TD][B]Well, the flight started off easy enough. With real world weather yielding clear skies, I thought I would break out my pride and joy - my Baron 58. Although I don't use her very often for "business", I do like to get her up every once in a while to "blow the stink off 'er." :-) In hind sight, I should fly her more often to prevent engine failures ....;-)

...cruising en route everything was beautiful...this is why I love Alaska...you don't get that anywhere else...

...I requested flight following if for no other reason than to keep myself sharp ...

... as I approached Petersburg, about 15 miles out, I noticed I was trailing some smoke from the starboard engine ...

... next thing I know, she quits on me ... I tried to restart her but no luck ... I cut the fuel flow and feathered the prop to reduce drag and to minimize the yaw I was fighting ...

... as I approached Petersburg, I forwent the right downwind and began quickly configuring the airplane for an emergency landing ... Since Petersburg is uncontrolled, I announced my intentions, but there didn't seem to be any other traffic...

... set her down a bit far to the right of center, but I'll take it. It's pavement. :D

Problem now is that I have to wait for repairs.

Holy Mackerel! That's a great narrative you gave. Fantastic work on presentation and picture quality.

I do a lot of real world flying, and noticed a few interesting things on your panel. Were you encountering icing conditions? I noticed you had pitot and prop heat on. I also noticed on final you had your one working engine leaned quite a bit. I usually go full rich on final, especially if landing at a sea level airport, which you were. Finally, it seems as though you kept prop sync on, which in my experience isn't common on takeoff or approach.

Forgive my nitpicking. Any pilot that successfully handles a twin with an engine out deserves the highest praise. Nice work, and great shots!!!

Nice work mate!

Hi Scott-

Thanks for the comments. :-) And to answer your questions, ...

>I do a lot of real
>world flying, and noticed a
>few interesting things on your
>panel. Were you encountering
>icing conditions? I noticed
>you had pitot and prop
>heat on.

Well, to actually experience any icing other than the pitot tube is non-existent in FS. :-) But I had them on due to the -6 degrees C ATIS was reporting. I just kept them on.

>I noticed on final you had
>your one working engine leaned
>quite a bit. I
>usually go full rich on
>final, especially if landing at
>a sea level airport, which
>you were.

Good eye. ;-) Normally I would go full rich; however, in this case I simply did not have an engine out checklist and forgot :-roll to go full rich on the mixture. Whoops. :-lol

>Finally, it
>seems as though you kept
>prop sync on, which in
>my experience isn't common on
>takeoff or approach.

Actually, Scott, you can see I didn't have sync on during takeoff or the initial part of climb. Later in climb it was turned on and remained on during cruise, which is common. However, again, with an engine out and no checklist, I forgot to turn it off. :-)

>Forgive my nitpicking.

No need to apologize. I also like to look at screenshots and see if I find anything out of the ordinary. I welcome the comments.

Wow!

Great looking screenshots - really well done, and a great story to go along with the flight.

Good stuff.

Thanks. :-)

You must have 2002Pro first. However, if you do, you can download my modified Baron panel from Flightsim or AVSIM--the filename is BaronJS1.zip. I also have a modified 172SP, 182S, and 182RG there too.

The repaint is by Jim Youngken and can be found also under the name be58jy*.zip (the * is a wild character).

Hope that helps.
