I've installed and used the patched game for about an hour. A superficial change is that the cfs3 movie now plays when you start the game, very likely can turn that off by tweaking some prefs, but I kinda liked it. Intro movies have always had a pretty high cool factor, even if they don't represent game quality on anything less than a 2 terahertz computer.
MS recommends that DirectX 9 be installed with this patch, so that could be good, bad, or otherwise. I always get nervous about installing anything-dot-oh, but hopefully, this'll fix some graphics problems and/or improve quality.
For the sake of comparing my results with what you folks get, I'll mention that I have an AMDS 1.4, 512 Meg RAM, & a gForce4 128. I've only used the patched version for an hour, but it seems to run a bit better than the previous version. Some of the graphics delays I used to see, such as just before take-off, seem to be less noticeable. I didn't have any installation/startup problems, but I suspect that MS erred on the side of paranoid caution, after all the problems folks described about the original version.
Pressing the M key during flight brings up an in-flight map, which is handy. Although, I was kind of enjoying the challenge of navigating the way real pilots did, though. So, I used to figure out a compass heading, stick to it, and hope my intended target showed up. If it didn't, I'd look for another, which I believe to be historically accurate. But, I suspect most folks will like the in-flight map.
I was disappointed to see that my 3D glasses don't work much better than they used to, so I suspect problems in that area are due more to nVidia's drivers than are to cfs3 of DirectX.
Hopefully, this patch will fix some of the problems described on this discussion board.
Curious what anybody else has to say,
Steve

Thanks Chris but I still can't access the CFS3 portion of that page. Can get in the insider site fine. Very strange. Anywhere else I can get the patch from?
Maybe I can get in at home...
Thanks,
Chris

Followup: I'm home from work now and have succesfully retreived the update. Now to install and play.
I dont want to install DX 9 though. Anyone else using it still under 8.2?
Thanks,
Chris

Ok, I installed the patch and..... CFS3 is working a LITTLE better than before, ie: I only get display corruption flashes every, ohh, 10 seconds or so... and the pauses are only around 3 or 4 seconds long every 20 seconds, give or take a parsec. I can honestly say that this is THE worst piece of ill written tripe to appear on the market from ANY developer in recent years. For this to be released by a second rate developer would be bad, but from Microsoft... it really does beggar belief.
It's off my H/D drive and back to the shop... this game is NOT fit for the purpose for which it was sold, and therefore I will get my money back... that I promise you.
For the record: XP2400 (mildly overclocked with adequate cooling), 512mb 3200 ram, GF4 4400Ti, and the rest is superficial.
What a bag of poo.
Craig.

Installed patch, so why do I still get the stuttering, I see no
improvement with frame rates, so I guess I will have to live
with it. If this is the best MS can do then they are in for a big
surprise whenever they release Flightsim 2004, I doubt there will
be a lot of suckers buying it when it comes out.

Back from town, and £40 better off. Man, I feel so much better now.
Just going to have a quick fly of a proper combat sim... I think we all know which one, comrade :lol

I agree with the opinions up and down this thread that the patch does not improve stutters in DX8.2 (at least on my system it made them worse). BUT I finally DL'd DX 9 (32 MB large) with my dialup account) and... allelujah !!!
Happy Camper now!
P3 1000 512 MB RAM
GeForce ti 4200 128 MB
1152 x 864 x 16
All settings on 2 except clouds =1
All shadows, water, reflections, lighting, etc.: Off
Cranking up the settings to 5 (except clouds still =1) brings down framerates under these conditions to the middle 20's: not good, but on a boat anchor system what more can ya expect?

Craig Hi, Which one is that. I'm ready to chuck this cf3. Yuk. Give me the name and stuff of the one you got. I'll get that one. Thanks Robt.
I turned off Antializing... and the flashes dissappeared.

I tend to agree with you. I think microsoft just ran out of time or plainly didn't give a ****.

The patch will not run telling me that the EXE file contents differs from the patch. What now? Can any one please email me the EXE file to sjames@avis.co.za?

I would guess you are running a no cd crack?
The no cd changes the exe and then the patch can't recognise it. Either re-install CFS3 then the patch, and then the no cd, (Maybe an updated no cd is required, not sure?) or extract the original from the disk, put it back in the CFS folder and do the same as above.
Sadly, I no longer have CFS3 on my computer, so can't send it to you, but you can exract it from the original disk, as I said.
