The game won't run. I get the message that Direct X wasn't detected. What do I do?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-25-02 AT 06:14PM (EST)[p]Since CFS3 won't run without DirectX 8.2 or later, then you have several options.

One, insert your CFS3 CD into your CD-drive, cancel any automatic installations. Open Windows Explorer, select the CD-drive with CFS3 and search for the DirectX folder, select the setup.exe for directX and let it install to your computer. It is surprising that it didn't ask you about DirectX on CFS3 installation. If it did, maybe you indicated no.

Two, visit Microsoft and download DirectX 9 and install it to your computer. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8510F9C3-1679-482B-B903-2352B58AF584&displaylang=en

I have tried both these methods, and neither has worked. The message I get reads as follows:

CFS3Config could not detect DirectX 8.1. Please reinstall DirectX.

I have reinstalled it a number of times. By reinstalling, I assume it means installing again over the original installation, since I do not know how to uninstall DirectX. Any more help?

I have DX9, which i have as a novelty....I generally keep everything of mine updated, and it fixes bad installs of previous things. DX9 is also now redistribultable (spelling, duh) so i assume its out of beta.

Visit http://microsoftgamesinsider.com/CFSInsider/FAQs/default.htm for some help.

Also test DirectX. Select start, accessories, system tools, system information, Tools menu, DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Let it stabilize, then click on each tab and test each function. In the middle of the Display page make sure DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Accelerations are enabled. If you detect problems, try the Troubleshooter page to fix the problems.

Direct x buster might help, might not, and some say its dangerous to use it. I would do a forum search on 'dx buster' here and at Avsim.com and read the threads on how dx buster has worked for other people. It did work for me.

Anyway, here is one site that has dx buster:
