OK..I have a MX440 card on my HP 861n, 120G HD, 512M, 2.66ghz system..
I received a $175 "attaboy" from my company and the missus said "do
what you want with it"..so..I'm going to get a new graphics card..
What can I get with $175 (or so)?

For that kind of money you have two options, you can go for an ATI 9600 XT or for an NVidia 5700 Ultra. ATI offers better image quality and performs a bit better than the NVidia Card. However, do not go for a 5600 or 5600 Ultra, it will be a complete waste of your money. I bought a 5600 Ultra, it was nice, but performance was on the weak side.
Another option would be to hang on to that money and save another $100 in order to get an ATI 9800. That would be my approach if I had the option.

To add to my previous comment, you can now get a 5900SE from NVidia for about the same price as a 5700 Ultra. EVGA is currently carrying this new product and can be found at www.newegg.com for about $190.00. It performs better than a 5700 Ultra and ATI's 9600/9600Pro/9600XT, you should check this out. The product can be found by either looking for a GeForce 5900XT or 5900SE.

I would not get Nvidia... see for yourself http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031023/nvidia-nv38-nv36-40.html
You can get the Radeon 9600, 9700, or the 9800 Pro 128mb as they are all good cards. Its just not Nvidia's time to reign unfortunately!
