Now if my recollection of Chili's Geography is correct, Chili is a long thin Country on the West coast of South America. Ever since FSX came out I've been seeing Dozen's and Dozen's of new Photoreal sceneries of Chili. What does this Guy do, take a square foot of Chili at a time, and upload it? I do not wish to denigrate anybody's hard work in improving our Flight Sim world, but I am curious as to why so much is needed.
Bill, the curious. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Hi Bill,
Perhaps the guy loves his country and has taken the time to provide the best reproduction of it's scenery to those of us who enjoy using FS to travel the world as we fly.
Can we expect that you will do the same for your state? If so I would appreciate it as I enjoy flying around the beautiful countryside of the US.
Take care
Gary :-)

I'm still Curious Gary! Your Post did nothing to satisfy my Curiosity. If Chili takes this much, will I need Terrabytes of disk space to see the World?
Bill ;) ;)

On an unrelated note, it's Chile actually. Just a friendly pointer in case somebody might have a pickle.

He's taking squares of area one degree by one degree in size.
A rough check shows Chile to be 38 degrees high and 11 degrees wide - so that would be 418 different groups required to cover the country. I think it takes 16 files to cover one square. So 7,686 individual files.
Of course there would be some adjustment for variations - and I'm not sure what he plans to do about offshort islands like Robinson Curso and Easter.

I love your description of Easter Island as an "offshore" island. :-)

To mis-quote Bob Ucker - 'Just a bit offshore'
Of course the funny part is people still think Google Earth would be great for FS texture/ autogen replacement.
Which is basically what this fellow is doing - replacing autogen with GE photoscenery.
How many files and how many terabytes would the US take?

I don't see WHY this could/should possibly effect anyone HERE at this forum, as this is NOT the FSX forum. :-)

Bill,
Ok, so it's FS2004 scenery-sorry. But why the ref to FSX? I don't get the relationship (if there is any). Many different last names, so it must be a group, which would explain the quantity.
I guess I can sub 'Chile' for 'repaint' and it would apply, due to overkill, to any version of FS, if I wanted to gripe about 'why so many'. So, I know what you mean. You have to learn to pick ONE-just too much to handle otherwise.
Reggie's assessment is interesting and shows how some go hog-wild with simming 'stuff. And probably don't know HOW to stop-heehee. 'Opa' Marshall took one for Isala De Pascua (Easter Island - scip_07.zip, 1.4 Mb) and 'enhanced' it, to where it now is a 7 Mb zip (5 times as large), so maybe the work is/are 'ok'?

It is FSX scenery, I haven't seen anything to indicate it's usable in FS2004.
This thread usually ends up in FS2004 discussions because people don't filter their searches for FS2004 only files - thus seeing all these files.
The author did have some discussion about this project before he started the work. He was very unhappy with the default FSX landclass, so rather than whine, he decided to do something about it, and come up with better.
I'll certainly never fault anyone for taking that kind of action in FS.
I'm also pretty sure he didn't fully understand how BIG a project it would turn out to be. I sincerely hope he finishes the whole country, just from the standpoint of finishing a project. How many partially complete ones are there in the various file libraries?
Of course, I would have only done the major cities.

It might be a long thin country, but it's still rather large, heck I'm only just leaving Peru tonight and that took me over 6 hours in a Seneca V to do, even then I cut short to go into Bolivia before Chile.

John,
Sounds like you got LOST (heehee). Don't head East OR West. There is no fuel available on mountain tops, or open ocean (haha).

Senor Ventura must be 'crazy' because of the enormity of the job of converting 1999 Landset satellite data. Santiago (the city) alone may be as much as 20 Mb!! Ouch. But, did not download any, so can't say if it's good, or has banding, or how much color (RGB) it has. Photo REAL? I HOPE, but doubt it, so I pass (the Chilli). Burp!
