Recently, with no additional stuff added to my FS, my ATC stutters once in awhile. Sounds something like this: "Southwest 219, cleared to land r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-runway 25L". Sounds like a skipping record.During this,FS freezes, then resumes after ATC returns to normal. Any ideas what causes this?

fbobum brings up a good point. If that doesn't help:
I would try re-installing your sound card drivers before you get too far into thinking about re-installing FS9? I would get the latest drivers for your sound device.
When you do a "CTRL+ALT+DEL" and check "Applications" and "Processes"...do you see anything that shouldn't be there?
There are probably many more reasons that this could be happening...and I will leave that to those more technically minded to answer?
Anytime FS9 exhibits behavior which suggests something else is using resources (FS9 doesn't really use your graphic card resources...it likes CPU...and any "hickup" suggests something ELSE is using the CPU), I always suggest a check for spyware and such. I know, I know...you have regularly checked and cleaned your well protected computer.
Keep this in mind...the people who screw with your computer have nothing better to do than figure out new ways to sneak in...and the unwashed, lowlife losers are trying 24/7/365...they are CERTAINLY not getting laid! (can I say that??). With that in mind, I always suggest 3 freeware programs...AND NO OTHERS!!
SpywareBlaster...prevents infections when regularly updated.
Spybot:Search and destroy...cleans spyware and also prevents infection.
HijackThis...the perfect tool to examine what is running when you start your system up...you MAY be surprised! I would suggest ONLY these programs...many "anti-spyware" freeware is just the opposite...a "vector" used to infect your system.
I mention all this because, as you stated, you have added nothing to FS9 to cause this? There are many reasons this could be happening but I'll answer to those I know about.
I know I keep harping on Spyware, in these forums...but I cannot overemphasize the attacks we receive, every day, unknowingly. It may have nothing to do with your problem...but do you really want your system doing things OTHER people tell it to do?? Most people don't mention spyware until they are infected so heavily with it that their internet connection begins to slow...at that point it's not an infection...it's an "infestation".
Keep a "Clean Machine!"

>How long since your last HD defrag?
About three weeks.....guess it may be due? And about potential viruses......my Norton didn't detect anything the last time I did a scan, about 2 weeks ago. I've heard they sometimes miss things. I'm gonna start with the simplest, being a defrag, and go from there. Thanks, guys!

Please, always check and clean software before messing with hardware. Your drive needs defragging and disc cleanup run. Also clean out your temporary internet storage if you do not already have it on auto dump. Insure anti-virus software is up to date and running well. Nine times out of ten it is not a hardware problem. It takes more to keep computers clean today especially if you surf the net.
Dell XPS 400 Dual Core running at 2.8 GHz with 800Mhz FSB
1 GB Ram and 80GB hard drive
128MB ATI Radeon X300 SE HyperMemory
17" Ultra Sharp Flat Panel

See??? What madtun said. Make sure your "machine is clean" because it WILL mess with your FS9, if not.Trust me on that...I've "been there, done that".
Your "Anti-virus" program may not be adequate...it looks for Virii, not Spyware. They are 2 different things and I've had my anti-virus fail, in the past, to catch them. I realize this is neither "here nor there"...but I would like to ensure that you have a "Clean" system before before we tackle this problem with the sound issue?

Do you keep Nortons up to date? Remember it costs money for updates. I go with a free antivirus - Avast! antivirus.

Look for a freeware utility called FS Autostart by Ken Salter. It has a bit of a learning curve but once you have the profiles set up it is easy to use.
You tell it which unneeded services to shut down when running FS. If you are not connected to the Internet physically (not just not logged-in) when running FS you can shut down your AV and firewall. You start FS and any add-ons with this and when you quit FS it will restart those applications.
I use another program which came from the PC Magazine libraries called End-It-All. The magazine libraries are now by annual subscription of I believe $19.95. You must be familar with what services you can kill. When you are done with FS you restart the computer to run normally with all your protection.
I also have the instant messaging drivers renamed so they can not be restarted. I do not use that service.
I also recommend you consider a seperate sound card and disable on-board sound so your CPU is not tied up rendering wav files. Same with on-board video if you use it especially to free up shared RAM. FS is very CPU intensive using the motherboard CPU heavily for graphics rendering even with a seperate video card but every little bit helps.
