Let's say one wanted to try one's hand at repainting freeware aircraft, just for fun. Where do you start? Is there special software that does this, or are we simply talking about modifying .bmp files in Paintbrush? Is there an instruction manual online somewhere?

Related question: In the downloaded Katana (katffc24.zip), for instance, the readme.txt says the colors of the pilot's hair and clothng have been "left open" so you can change them. How would you do that?

We have a separate forum specifically for aircraft design questions such as this. You'd probably do better to ask in that forum instead of hte general FS2004 forum.

In general you're correct...it is a matter of modifying bitmaps, though you'll probably want something better than Paintbrush. Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop are popular choices.
