Click this link to go to the site for gmax the 3dmodleing tool that comes with FS2002. http://www2.discreet.com/products/d_products.html?prod=gmax
Discreet is the same company that makes 3d studio max so I believe this could be quite a good tool!

I just read a big write up about gmax and it sounds like microsoft uses 3ds max and a devoloper version of gmax to make FS2002, and then when the game ships the copy of gmax that comes with it will be taylored just for FS2002 so all the tools are there and easy to use but this limits the possibilaty to use it for other games.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-01 AT 05:11PM (EDT)[p]Hi Mooney,
gMax will be a part of the FS2002 Professional package. It will be implemmented as a plugin that exports MDL and Textures to put into your aircraft's container file. Note: You will need a paint program (like PhotoShop, etc.) to create the textures themselves. You can start making aircraft and buildings in 3DStudioMax (r3 or r4) now, and then be able to export them to gMax. As for constraints, the more polygons and textures, the greater the impact on performance. So, while there is no known limit right now, the limit will actually be performance issues and not a hard physical object count of some kind.

The "Gamepak" that allows you to use G-Max is a licenced file that Microsoft have to pay Discreet to use, as such it is provided only in the Pro version of FS.

Then it is not like the other gamepaks that I have seen that on can download and use is this correct? Strange that the others all offer the gamepaks for all to use but MS does not...
I can us GMAX for other games just not with FS2002! such is life.
thanks

Hi
I expect that MS wish to use the Gamepak as a value addon for the FS2002 pro pack, so if you want to use Gmax to create addons for FS2002 you will need the Pro pack. I don't believe that MS has any plans to release the Gamepak as a free download.
Simon.
(I have been using GMax for a short while now, and it seems to replace FSDSpro very well. So in my opinion it is well worth the extra cost of the FS2K2pro pack on its own.)

Simon I have a question...
I wa sgoing to get FSDpro but they told me that it does not make hard surface's so it would not work for what I want to make. I am working on a space Station or base and it must be landable SO does GMAX have hard surface?
I am reading the docs but I have yet to get this answer can you OR anyone tell me if it has this in it?
Thank you

Hi
Sorry for the Delay in reply, I am still getting to know Gmax but I have not yet come across any options to make a surface "landable". However as I have never tried to make scenery in Gmax or FSDS, I have not really looked for an option and it had not occured to me that you would have to make it hard anyway. Sorry not much use, but if I see anything I will post a new thread.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-01 AT 07:30PM (EDT)[p]Simon I have been told to take a short runway section and use it as the needed hard surface. We can make it any size or shape I do think and will try it out soon.
I took my standard 30 day old FS02 back and cried on my knees to exchange it and they did so! I know have the pro with all the other stuff but after spending all day trying to make GMAX make a tube larger in only one way I think I need to learn more by getting FDSD Pro and start from there.
Thanks

BTW it cost me one days pay $30 to exchange it so I will wait a bit before I get the other.... maybe ten minutes LOL

Have you tried the GMAX Tutorials? I don't think they come with the GMAX install which MS supply, if you don't have them you can download them from the Discreet website. I found them very useful, and in less than a day I had produced my first aircraft! (It was rubbish but what do you expect for a day? :) )
Keep at it, the steep learning curve shallows once you start to get the logic of the system.

Yes I have them and have been using them BUT yes there is always a BUT
But I am slow to learn in my old age....I have tried to do scenery with the old prograns from Abacus V1.1 and a few of the free ones not to long ago and I just could not do a thing!
BUT I got Abbacus Scenery Apprentice and I make a space platform and it showed up in FS02! I did a few more with color and some changes and they also worked but I was using the demo so it was and is limited for me.
Since I could understand the how to in it I have oreded the FSDSP and the book or booklet manual they will ship to me. Today or tomorrow I should get the KEY and download the program and see what I can do with the book open! LOL
I get confused very easy with such programs but once I get most of my foot into the door I get much better so FSDSP will hopfuly push my foot into the door of GMAX at some time.
I remember first looking at the grids and having no idea what to do or how but now I know how to start and can rotat and move and use two parts so I am getting there...
I will post my first project so that you and or the others can tell me what I have done wrong or and were to go next! LOL
Thanks very much
