1.2 GhZ Athlon
Asus A7M-266
512Mb DDR Crucial Ram
MSI 64Mb DDR Geforce 4 graphics adapter

Maybe a faster processor, and a better video card would help.

Based on what we've been hearing from beta testers, if FS2004's final version is anything like what they've been getting, I don't think you will have a problem with performance. Unless of course, you are looking for 30fps, sliders maxed.

Martin, you never said if your GeForce4 was an MX or a Ti series. That makes all the difference in the world. If you have one of the Ti series (4200, 4400, 4600), you should be able to run it just fine. If you have an MX series, you're definitely gonna need a new video card, along with a faster processor.
The good news is that you'll still be able to use your Crucial RAM. I'll be running it with an Athlon 2400, overclocked to 2.4 Ghz (faster than the Athlon 3200- I bought 400 Mhz RAM). But, I'm fairly certain that you wouldn't have any problem running it on say, a non-OC'd 2400 with a GF4 Ti 4200. Also, the MSI Ti 4200's overclock like crazy... Good luck.
If you're interested, here's a link for the lowest prices, and most reliable service on the web. I'm just not sure whether they ship across the Atlantic or not. http://www.newegg.com BTW, they sell a retail (comes with heatsink & fan, plus 3 year warranty) Athlon XP 2400 for $84 or $85.

Hey Martin,
I assume that since your in the RAF that your currently in the UK (or at least on this side of the pond). If so Robert's suggestion of newegg.com won't do you too well as newegg don't ship over here.
I recently bought a new mobo and CPU from [link:www.komplett.co.uk|Komplett] They are well priced and have excellent service.
Only downfall is that they only use one shipping option, DHL overnight service, although I've never had probs with that.
The CPU I bought is an Athlon XP2400+ for £61 (GBP) including VAT.
Also bought a new Asus A7N8X Deluve gold (rev2.0 for the fellow techheads). That was an excellent price aswell.
Hope this helps.

P.S. While on the subject of FS9 performance, can anyone tell me what I should expect out of my machine?

Why would this be ? It is my understanding ( and possibly an incorrect one, but I dunno ) that the only major difference between the Ti and the MX series is the MX does not render reflective textures, which is now correctable with a small download. I know very little in this area so if you ( or someone ) could expound on this issue, I for one would be appreciative :)

You should be fine then. Unless MS pulls off a miracle, don't expect 30fps though. I'd expect performance similar to 2k2 if what we've been hearing is true.
If it turns out to be too slow, you can always get a new processor/mobo afterwards to speed things up.

Bob -
The big difference is in the clock and memory speeds. The Ti series cards render at MUCH faster rate than the MX series. It's not just a matter of functionality, the MX cards are woefully lacking when it comes to processing power. Completely different chip sets. I would not recommend that anyone "upgrade" to an MX-based card - just not enough horsepower.

Just for another perspective, I recently upgraded my video card from a GeForce4 Ti4600 to an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro... man, what a difference! I was pretty happy with the 4600, but I came across an offer that was too good to pass up (and I get greedy for more FPS sometimes ;-)) and switched. The major things that have changed are that I can now run FS2002 at 6xAA and 16xAF and get as good a frame rate as with my 4600 with no AA at all. For me it was a big difference. I won't lie that I had some hassles figuring out which Catalyst driver set to use in the beginning, but now that I've got that sorted out, things are running just fine. And it made a big difference in how my OpenGL games look as well (Forgotten Battles especially). So while I got a good long ride out of using nVidia cards, I'd have to say that for now ATI has them one-upped.
thanks,
Bill Womack
