for those who are interested, DirectX 9.0b is available for download on the Windows Update site under "recommended updates".

I could not download it. It says that 'There are no updates available at this time'.

for those that are intersted ;-) ... this is due to a critical security breach in dx9.0a !!!!
you can also dl the security fix (as usual through windows update)
it is NOT a performance enhancing upgrade.

And if I download it and install it, do you all PROMISE that it won't shut down my PC for me? (That is usually what happens whenever I try to install something that is supposed to "improve" things on my computer.)

With great respect, it is either performance enhancing or I have benefitted from some magical event. Having done NOTHING other than DL 9.0b I picked up 5-7 fps in the default skyhawk. On and around KORD I'm getting 22-26 locked at 26.
In the wonderful DF 310 which did cost me a few FPS (had to given its complexity...in the best sense of that word) I am getting 18-22 vs. 14-18.
Smooth as glass in 60 degree steep turns overhead KORD. Used to stutter slightly.
Nothing else changed.
