I currently run win98se and am thinking of upgrading to XP,is it worth just buying the upgrade, but start afresh reformat and then do the upgrade,or is the upgrade route not the best route.

If you have your 98 CD you can buy the upgrade version. If you don't you will need to purchase the full version. Both versions are identical but the upgrade version asks you for the 98 CD during the install. I would do a clean install of XP rather than upgrade.

Agreed. I have an old Win 98 copy, so I bought the upgrade, and did the full install. Nice and clean.

Not at all that way for me. I popped the XP CD in the drive and installed it right over the top of my upgraded ME which was upgraded from 98SE which was upgraded from 98. No messin' around with uninstalling previous version, format the HDD or anything. Works like a charm from day one.

I installed XP Home over Windows 98. I spent a lot of time before the install to clean up my system by getting rid of any rubbish and turning off nearly all of the auto-start at startup programs then doing a full check of my hard-disk and a defrag.
I inserted the first CD and followed the prompts all the way through and came up with 100% of my 98 system running on XP. I don't know if I was just lucky or maybe rewarded for taking the time to clean up 98 before I started. I believe it was the care I took to clean up 98. Tony

One last thing to add. I know this post is a little old now but...
The windows XP CD is a bootable cd. Someone in an earlier post seemed to have trouble getting it to start the installation process. Simply go in to your BIOS, change the boot sequence to start with your CD ROM first, and that should work. You then have the option to Format you drive, install etc.
Thats all.

Upgraded over WIN98SE. I was smart and got all the XP drivers for my hardware before I started.
Popped the XP Upgrade CD in and let 'er rip. Only glitch I found was my joystick assignments and settings (sens and null zone) all dropped back to default. Wish I had written it all down or something.
The only other glicth was a shocker: Started XP the other day and half my icons were missing!? My daughter had deleted them from her desktop, and they disappeared from everyone's desktop! What kind of ##### is that!!! I quickly restored them and all is well. Typical MS. Instead of prevention, they write an easy restore program.
Oh well.
