I hadnt realised up until now, that replacing motherboards etc can cause Windows XP to completly lock you out.

Repair Install to SET XP to New Motherboard

Caution

"Do Not BOOT into Windows XP on first boot after Motherboard or Hard Drive change! If booting from CD is not an option, return to BIOS and make sure booting from CD is the first boot option. Booting into Windows is only an option when you do a direct replacement of the Motherboard, otherwise it is like playing Russian Roulette. If you lose, it is fatal!"

I often wondered about this. I was thinking about installing a new Mobo on my existing machine, but wasnt sure if XP would let me since it has that activation thing. My PC did not come with XP, I purchased it and installed it myself so I think it's OK. I would be installing from the CD as well so I guess everything would be cool. Now, to figure out if I actually want to go through the whole process!
Thanks for the link.

LAST EDITED ON May-07-03 AT 04:19PM (EDT)[p]You guys just found out? lol ... hehe, every time you change a major hardware component in Windows XP you have to re-activate it if you are using Home Edition...its going to think that you took the hard drive and put it on another system which is what you didn't do in this case...just call them and tell them you got a new mobo its what I did and what I do everytime I upgrade hardware on my system.

I think that what he's pointing out is that this has been a documented fact since WinXP's introduction in November 2001.

It shouldn't be a problem, though. All it takes is a call to MS and they'll get it reactivated right away.
