I rather annoyed at Microsoft, not because Flight is a disappointment, quite frankly I'm of the opinion it's free, I didn't pay for it and nobody forced me to try it.

But I'm annoyed because not only will it not install, wasting my time, but they are wasting my bandwidth allocation at 1.4gb a pop, by throwing an error after extracting the files and then deleting all of them! So everytime I attempt to try it again, it has to redownload everything all over again. When it's near the end of the month and I'm running out of my download limit, this is not good.

I've tried disabling my AV, but beyond that I'm not sure what else I can try. Google seems to think this is only happening to me, I'm it, the only one on the internet with the problem.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit, for what it's worth. :/

This is from the error log, in case someone else is having the same issue and comes across a fix:

Same deal with me. Tried it twice, and that's all the time and effort it deserves. I'm already having issues with other software this week, I don't need this aggravation! I may try again once the bugs get ironed out. — Bob

Yep robertjs same problem since 09:30 this morning. First time it failed with that error and I tried to re-download and it doesn't get as far as downloading the 1.4 Gig file, just bombs out. I've tried the corrections that MS put up on their website and that doesn't change anything either. I've emailed them and no response so far and I've posted on their FaceBook account but now FB is down as well so I don't know if they have responded or not. Not a good start for launch day is it. Gas anyone actually downloaded successfully? Or are we the only mugs who have tried? :-)

Installed Flight, crashed on my 1st flight, had to exit the game. Next morning when I booted up my computer and tried to play Flight I got an error message that my install of Flight was corrupted and would close down. Uninstalled Flight and did a reinstall, but when I attempt to launch Flight I still get the message I have a corrupted install. I tried to run the repair but I get a message that the repair is looking for a msi file under AppData, local which is not there. Uninstalled again and looked for every file I could which had to do with Flight. I still get a corrupted install message after a third reinstall. Uninstall is not removing all the files that it needs to. Out of desperation I did a system restore to no avail, still have a corrupted install.

Not going to solve the problems above, but it did download, install and run fine for me.

Not going to solve the problems above, but it did download, install and run fine for me.

I have Flight running OK, after I had restored my registry to a save that I had made before trying to install Flight (something got screwed up in my first attempt), but now I cannot get the free previews of the two extra aircraft to install.

They download OK but will not appear in the hangar.

Perhaps I am not doing something important?

Any clues anyone!?

Haven't tried to download them, but are the previews actually aircraft, or just videos and pictures? Try opening the Games for Windows Marketplace program and see if they show up in there.

I tried what you suggest loki but without success.

Quite frankly I find the whole Windows Live /GFW interface deeply unsatisfactory and non-user friendly.

I have been messing about with Flight for most of today and if it was a complex simulation like DCS A10 for example, I wouldn't mind the frustration if I knew it would be worth it in the end, but this is just a console play for points/pennies childish game and I really don't think it is worth using up disc space for, or expending any more time.

How can anyone go from an 737NGX, say, to this, and feel they have achieved something after a flight?

At least they had the good sense, and honesty, perhaps, to make it free, otherwise there would be accusations of scam and non-productive demands for refunds filling the internet.

Glad to see that I am not alone. Getting same error message about a corrupt install. Sigh.....

Oh well, thanks for making me feel less lonely, for a moment I thought the only one on the planet with this problem was me. :)

Hi Guys,

Downloaded "Flight" overnight, loaded up first time. I already had a Windows Live Account so logged in perfectly. Hope my specs are of some use to help you get this working:

Self Build
Windows 7 64bit
Intel i7 920 - Overclocked to 3.8 GHz
6 Gb Ram
Nvidia Geforce GTX 580 - with latest drivers.
All Flight settings on High. - very smooth.
Changed directory to install to my E: drive as my C: drive is a small SSD

Actually having fun with this, having bought FSX, FS9 in the past. I was recently going to re-install FSX and all my add-ons, but was actually dreading the install and setup process, (takes an age) then saw that Flight was released. Took about 10 minutes to install and setup and it runs perfect "out of the box" and looks a darn sight better than FSX. Its free to try !......... I'm happy, and no i'm not a child, i'm 50 this year !

Pete.

Previews are 3d models that you can look at in the hangar but I don't think you can fly them. I may be wrong.

Same problem here ... it runs fine on my Windows7 x64 machine but not on my Vista x32 and creates this error.
From an aviation enthusiasts view this program is almost useless, none of the aircraft have the usual coloring of speed ranges that EVERY real aircraft has, keeping you from getting to close to the stall speed or being to fast for certain manovers. None of the two default airplanes has flaps! There is no GPS that shows you airports or has any more functionality than showing you relatively where you are on the island. The only planes you can fly is a oldtimer crop duster biplane and this new flying car/boat that does not even have enought instruments to actually fly. Then one of the worst things, when you start it, it turns all monitors execpt of the primary one blank and so you can not even use any of these to display the outside, or a seperate perspective or most significantly a VFR map. When you do a first time landing class and you are following the instructors rules, you end up high above the runway at stall speed and the instructors voice then tell you to turn the power to zero, which makes fall off the sky and not break into pieces.
It seems there is s reason it is not called flight simulator, because it definitely isn't. It is reducing all the fun you are used to from FSX and FS2004 to the level of games you can see on X-boxes, Playstations, Wii ... extremely disappointing.
The only positive thing is the fact that the entire 3D engine is much better than anything on the FSX, shades of sinlight in the cocpit are realistic, scenery objects (if every option set to maximum) look more realistic, but the coloring and content of the scereny itself is poor. Framerates are great, runny very fluent on a modern PC, but that is no wonder when you dont have any complexity on your aircraft and scenery, compared to aircrafts by Carenado or PMDG or scenerys like e.g. Aerosoft airports Munich or Frankfurt, where every single airports lightbulb, sign, ground paint and other tiny details is exactly the way it is in reality.
Anyway I hope when Microsoft Flight gets out of Beta, it will hopefully be available in a version that is an actual flight simulator and offers interfaces for cockpit peripherals and 3rd party add-ons, else they should really leave it for those low performance single monitor gaming systems and stay away from us.

With modern computers having caught up with the demands of FSX at a reasonable cost and with suitable add-ons, FSX can now be made to look fantastic/realistic and certainly no worse than Flight, looks wise.

The aircraft in flight are a joke but are fine if you just want a non demanding game.

When I saw a time limit is applied to finding things I just gave up.What are they thinking of....I did not want an arcade game, so it has been ditched.

It is hardly worth discussing as a simulator, it is not one and should not be part of a simulation forum discussion. (I am no child either being a pensioner and having owned every manifestation of MS flight simulators since they first were released.)

I downloaded it and it worked out okay with a minor hiccup................the first time I fired it up, I got the intro screen and then a blank/black screen. I ended it as a process, started it up again and it's worked fine since. For anyone that is having issues, I'd hit that task manager and terminate everything, disable whatever you should if you have an anti-virus or firewall.

Mine downloaded fine can't remember the speed, maybe 10 minutes? Before broadband I used to use dialup, and I had lots of experience with corrupted downloads just because the download was so slow. And some sites would even time out on me!

I tried installing Win 8 cons prev and it installed along side Win 8 dev prev which is in a folder called "Old Windows". FS9 and CFS3 are still working but FSX and Flight are not due to their security layers. So I'm down (except FS9 and CFS3) until I do something about Windows.

I thought there were flaps on the Stearman? Are there actually flap buttons on Flight?

Johnan most of us think Flight is a disappointment. I load up FSX or FS9 and say to myself what happened to their common sense? Flight however is just a product MS came up with to sell (through online addons), just like any other product a company might come up with. There's no reason for us to be upset. The management that took over the FS franchise screwed up on a scale we've never seen before. Hopefully market trends will demonstrate that. However who knows if MS will ever have the common sense to return to FS, after Flight I wonder.

It's ironic that they wanted to sell addons, and they avoid marketing to the very people who buy addons regularly.

Same problems here, downloaded it 4 times now and all I get is corrupted file with that error code. I have removed all of the downloaded files and folders each time so it`s a clean install but to no avail, now I have given up.

Are there actually flap buttons on Flight?

As some have pointed out, yes there are flap key assignments in Flight. The free aircraft don't have flaps though, so you would need to buy an add-on to make use of them.

Thank you. Wonder what that error code is about. Could it be not good enough broadband or hardware receiving the download? I had had routine corrupted downloads from my old days on dialup and pentium 3's. Although I worked wonders with them, downloaded openoffice in about 7 hours. :D

As modest as my system is (Q9450 and 4 gb ram), it has performed in a top notch way, and I've got really fast broadband. Which reminds me, my broadband is about 30 or more mb/sec but my router is 12 mb/sec, have to get a new one. :(

Wikipedia says that the Stearman can support flaps on both the top and bottom wings, however in this photo of one Stearman model it doesn't have flaps, scroll down for photo: http://amileofrunway.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

It is apparent that more than a few people are having issues with Flight. I'm posting this in the hope that it can be useful to some of you.

First of all, keep the installation files:
No reason to re-download every time if it fails or you wish to re-install. Yes, they are deleted automatically upon completion of the installation (attempt), but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't keep them. They're located in the folder %localappdata%\Microsoft\GFWLive\Downloads (Note: "%localappdata%" is an environment variable only present in Vista and Win7, on earlier Windows editions it corresponds to "%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data" in the English releases). To avoid losing the installation files, do not proceed with the install before you have copied the files to an alternate location.

Try a reboot first:
Reboot Windows. Yes, really. If you have done so already, then fine. If not, do it. Windows is still Windows. Reboots still "solve" a great number of issues encountered in Windows.

UAC enabled? Run as administrator:
Admittedly, this does seem like a stupid suggestion, since 1) the installation file is named "Setup.exe" and it is Windows Installer based, 2) the installation comes from Microsoft, who should know how to handle UAC gracefully, and 3) when running the installation, you actually get a UAC prompt anyway. Stupid or not, it is worth a try, and since this is an installation anyway, it is indeed proper to run it as an administrator.

If the problem is still present, try to see what happens with Process Monitor:
Personally I never needed to go this far, since the problem surprisingly disappeared after re-running the installation as administrator. Otherwise I would gladly have monitored the install to try to identify what went wrong. Process Monitor can help you identify a great deal of issues, but certainly not all. Start capturing, then start the install and wait until it has failed and produced the error message, then stop capturing in procmon. Read through it from the bottom up. Relevant processes are probably msiexec.exe and possibly Setup.exe, but it might not be wise to filter out all other processes since we do not know enough to eliminate everything else at this point. Look for permissions and access related results, since the 0x800710dd error is normally associated with such issues. If you find anything you believe might be relevant, either continue researching yourself, or post the output to this thread. Perhaps someone is interested enough to propose a simple fix for this issue.
