After Microsoft's announcement, there was pretty much a new topic in this forum every hour and a new post every five minutes, all announcing a new reason to attack Microsoft for this travesty: now, there've only been four posts today and no new topics for days. I'm not warmongering (trying to provoke an angry response) but have people calmed down now, and realised they were a bit too hasty to get at microsoft with both barrels? Have attitudes towards FLIGHT changed? Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting in two weeks we've all become the clearly childish market MS was aiming for, but can/are we giving them some reprive? I don't mean we should/shouldn't be excecuting MS at every opportunity but were we a bit childish and stuck up in our initial response?

Knee-jerk reactions are to be expected. Calm deliberation will come later. :) — Bob

Most of us have had our say! Now we wait for the release. That day, I suspect this will once again become an extremely busy forum...Don

I am waiting for confirmable performance improvement announcements around detailed airports and urban areas. I am also waiting to hear what is available in the MSFlight Store for purchase on the day of release, an oh so important detail for the "new direction" to have any chance of being successful.

So far ... MSCrickets.

Apparantely some of us (including myself :o) have realised that there are more (although not many :)) important things in life than Flight Simulation, and that we should stop whining and just stick with FSX for now.

I'm still Peeved about it, but love my FSX. Still not upgrading (if you'd call it that) To flight.

You can read at fsdeveloper what they exactly think - and this come from one of the most affluent designers group of freeware etc etc ;

Hi John,

I'm waiting to see if MS has a change of heart and releases the SDK. The fact that PMDG is not participating is a big deal to me. I don't want them to give in that's for sure.

I am heavily invested in FSX, in a direct way. Three units of FSX Gold, I think 2 or 3 more on the way plus Battlefield 3. I like FSX a lot. So far it is running very smoothly, but I have moderate settings.

It's not my desire at all to "attack" MS, I'm just responding to the information in the fact sheet and the apparent direction they have taken. Are they planning to build a real flight simulator for us in the future? 64 bit, fully multithreaded? The reason I mention these specs is because a lot of time has elapsed since the release of FSX, and the hardware has advanced greatly. Such an engine could give us stunning results that would last for a long time. Perhaps 3-D would be nice also? I'm just saying that if we were Flight's intended audience that they are not in touch with their customers. Perhaps they just wanted to make a grab for a piece of the entire add-on market and deny all freeware and such freedom and just see if we would tolerate the new format. All I can say is, freedom and an open marketplace is better, with unlimited PMDG's. FSX is just fine.

in the fact sheet

Which one of those are you referring to? The facts have been so skewed there are none as percieved by the Flight jaded lovers!

I mean, fact sheet, entirely new game and expansion packs only, and posted articles and forums that declare no Flight SDK. And word from PMDG that they will not agree to be part of that closed community.

The storm is over for now in the sense that everyone had their say and expressed their opinions, and as mentioned, people have other things to do in their life aside forums and flight simulator. I think a lot of people are so turned off at this point that this entire fiasco doesn't even matter.

PMDG opted out because it decided it didn't think it would make as much money as it wished. That's not a criticism of PMDG, because any company is entitled to look afer its own interests. Nor is it a criticism of Microsoft for the same reason.

It's not surprising the storm has died down. There's only so many times you can complain. No doubt it will start again when the sim actually gets released.

Eventually, though, this will become a support forum for people who actually want to use Flight and those who have no interest in it will go back to the other forums.

A lot of people respect PMDG for not giving in to MS, saying it shows not everyone has to follow Microsoft's every whim but really they've signed their death warrant as FSX can only live on for so long and it's unlikely MS will ask them again. Some people said they didn't want PMDG to be 'dumbed-down' but really, there was no proof this would happen, I know everyone thinks FLIGHT is for kids but they could have put a message on the product page for those developed by PMDG saying something like 'Difficulty: Extreme'.

I respect any developer who backed out........they stand not only for themselves, but also represent the freeware developers who weren't even given a hoot about in MS's direction of closing off the SDK if that is the final route/decision. I guess it's yet to be seen if you want to give them the benefit of the doubt.

No, no signed death warrant. When you are older you will understand negotiating and making deals better.

AND WHO THE HECK ARE YOU??? WHY I OUGHTA....!

I'm just kidding Nels! Today I was speaking to a game expert who seems like he would be a good contender for the Las Vegas tournaments. Our situation may have been a case of the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Up to this point possibly. The game person was explaining how Steam accounts work. and how he's fed up with certain big name game companies because they don't patch many bugs just leave them. He had plenty to complain about. It made our flight simulator world in the past look simple. But, thanks to MS Games it appears that we are heading into similar online gaming. Those gamers play online almost exclusively, that's where the action is. He is a technician also, he says it seems like companies are getting more and more edgey about activation issues and online game exclusive accounts.

I have used Linux quite a lot for the past 5 years. When I got broadband maybe 18 (?) months ago, I switched to using Linux exclusively for everything. Just using Windows for some portions of graphics editing, and most importantly FS. If it were not for FS I might not even need Windows. Any way, all this uptightness about activation, licensing, online game accounts, and the high cost of Windows, these concerns are all far away while I use Linux. I think these game providers are misbehaving also. So, we're all one big family, game providers, and game users, all having a good time, and rowdy ho-down. I like Win 8 (developers preview editiopn now, beta later, the final retail version), it looks really nice, very advanced. Right now a little confusing to use but I can get over that.

Flight looks beautiful, and it has been lightened up compared to FSX. I have a live and let live attitude, I just enjoy the freedom of the past FS. It's hard to tell how the final product will turn out, we'll have to wait and see. One thing I've learned from experience, FSX will last me a long time along with FS9.
