View Full Version : High power on engine start

So this is a little issue that has been bugging me for some time and I am just now trying to find an answer. Google and the forums search have not turned up a result that I can find.
The issue is with some aircraft (for example the default 737-800) when you start the engines, once they actually start the power jumps way up before stabilizing. I have the power levers at idle so that is not the issue. Any way to fix this?

Thats normal. it simulates starting of the engines. when you shut them down, then start them again, ( <contr> <shift> <F1> then <contr> <E> ), the same happens. Only way I know to not have this is to start a flight, save it. Then in future to start, load that saved flight and use <alt>-"go to airport", to hop to the location of your choice.
You can change everything like location, weather, flightplan, etc after you loaded the sim, but it will probably start with Display settings from when you saved that flight. So after loading, check the Display settings, especcially after installing new addons.
There may be a way to change this in the fsx.cfg but I dont think I would bother.... changing the fsx.cfg (somethig like enginestart=1 (making this up now!!)), could maybe result in flights that you saved in the air loading without running engines.... (made that up to, but thats the reason i wouldnt try changing fsx.cfg) I would never change fsx.cfg if its not absolutely neccesary. if it aint broken, dont fix it.
Also think about making FSX starting with parking brakes engaged allways. Dont know if possible or if so, how, but I think it could solve your problem. (Think outside the box)

Hi miller
Just some thoughts. Check your default flight and see how you saved it. If you saved it with throttles up that might be an issue. Try loading a flight in the 737 at your favorite airport. Shut your engines off. Set brakes turn lights off apu's ect. basically cold and dark. Save this flight and check the box "save as default flight". All your flights should start cold and dark after that. It works good for me. More realistic.
And don' worry about changing your config file. Save a copy and experiment. you can even delete it. FSX will make a new one when you restart FSX. You have to redo you scenery setting and traffic settings ect. but that's not to bad.

Thanks for the replies but that wasn't exactly what I meant.
When I start a flight the engines are off (which is fine and not the issue I was bringing up). However, when I start an engine, it goes through the start sequence and once it starts (in the default 737 for example) the power jumps all the way up to about 90% N1 or so which is not realistic at all. The engine N1 rpm should slowly continue to increase until it is at its normal idle N1 rpm. On some other aircraft I have downloaded (SGA MD-80 for example) this does not occur. It starts up and slowly spools to its idle N1 setting like it should.

It is in the model design.

I don't have the link, but I found a tutorial on manually starting the default 737 on YouTube. Works fine for me and the power doesn't hit 90%.
Search for the vid; I know it's there somewhere. Try that if u find the video.

So not something that could be edited in the air file or cfg?
Do you have the auto-throttle in the ON position?
No

So perhaps it is from me using the auto start instead of manually doing it?

It's modeled in as stated above, so I'm guessing autostart will do that..

For the record, I manually start, and that never happened on the default one for me. Seems its a surge from the auto starting gubbins.

That did it, manual start and no problem. Funny how some planes don't have that issue. Thanks for the help.

Or start it with the volume knob off and slowly raise the volume once the engines have started and run through their initial surge (just to throw out a silly option.)

This is normal, no bug or such a thing. it's called a hot start when you turn on the starter switches and the fuel cutoff switches are closed. you should leave them open until the engines are running at min. 20% N2, then close them (use the engine control window for closing them). I had the same problem, and this works :)
