I just completed tutorial 7 and flew a Glider. That was pretty amazing. I would love to fly one in real life. Really gives you a feeling of being a bird soaring through the air, all expect the beeping thermal indicator lol.

I think I am going to purchase the REX, UTX, and GEX add ons and hope they will vastly improve the graphics a bit. I still don't know a lot about the instrumentation or how to read it accurately but I think I was up to about 5,000 ft (I could be way off), but from there the Lake Tahoe city below looked pretty good. Hopefully everything will look amazing once I upgrade.

Also I am really torn between Saitek PZ44 Pro Flight Yoke System and the Saitek X52 USB Flight Control System. I am not so thrilled about the poor quality plastic the Flight Yoke has from what I have heard but it seems with it I can later add the rudders to it as well as the different instruments Saitek makes to get a real cockpit feel.

I currently have a racing cockpit setup similar to this one except I am using a Logitech G25 Racing setup.

It wouldn't be too much of a problem to modify my racing setup to replace the pedals with rudders and the wheel with the yoke. I would need to switch out the support for the gear shift for one that would accommodate the throttle controls. Hopefully, if I decide to upgrade and get the panels for it they can be attached somehow.

Actually here is the exact setup I currently have...

Do any of you have any experience with the flight yoke? I see they have a Cessna one that is a bit more expensive but I really like the trim control that can be added to it. Any suggestions?

I hve the Saitek Proflight yoke system with throttles and pedals and have been very happy with it. It has a nice feel about it, though I had to return the throttle quadrant when first purchased as it was spiking (no probs with the replacement though).

As far as gliding goes, I still use my stick because nearly all glidrs are controlled that way (never heard of one with a yoke).

If you want ot try your hand at gliding, just wander along to your local club on a weekend (usually best to be early). They are nearly always on the lookout for new members and will gladly let you have a trial flight for very little cost and you can hang around and see what goes on (that's how I started and was hooked from the first visit).

I doubt there is one around where I am in NC. At least I haven't heard of one. But thanks for the suggestions.

I got GEX, UTX and REX and installed them. I don't have a clue how to set them up. It seems some stuff looks like it's working but others are not. Like on some mountains I flew over in the helicopter tutorial had terrible graphics splotches on them. Then when I flew out from my local airport, I was just sitting on the run way and all of a sudden it popped up several trees into around around my plane that was on the runway. Another thing I noticed was the highways had been cut out of the ground but there wasn't any texture on them. Does anyone know how to properly configure these addons?

Hi Kris,

Welcome to FS - sounds like you are on the right track... I'm still using FS9 so I'll let someone more familiar with FSX help with the setup...

Really gives you a feeling of being a bird soaring through the air, all expect the beeping thermal indicator lol.

Just OBTW... That beeping thermal instrument is exactly what it sounds like in a real glider... If your interested - you should be able to find a place for a ride... I think it only cost me about $75.00 for a flight in one near where I live... And it was INCREDIBLE...

Regards,
Scott

If you like the glider here are some ideas:

1. Go here and check out some of the freeware gliders: http://www.virtualsoaring.org/
2. Also go here to Wolfgang Piper's site for even more freeware gliders: http://www.fsglider.de/p_e.htm
3. Two utilities worth checking out (CumulusX! and WinchX!) are available here: http://www.luerkens.homepage.t-online.de/peter/
CumulusX has both free and pay versions. The pay mainly lets you do some things like get the tow plane to circle vice go straight out.
4. If that isn't enough, Aerosoft offer a payware Discus that includes straight glider as well as motored. An advantage of the downloads and pay is better vario gauges (beeping altimeter) that are compensated. Pay Discus has a flight computer for advanced soaring.

It appears that they have copied the system requirements from the Fsx box. I can only imagine the huge disappointment for someone who meets the bare minimum specs and buys this. What, I need a new computer too?
