View Full Version : Posky aircraft: A different problem other than the shoddy FDE

So, here is my dilemma. I am a "seasoned" simulator pilot who is always looking for the realistic experience. I always aim for Posky aircraft, though their FDE's are not realistic at all. (Warren says that he has been in level-D sims. I have been in level-D sims too, and his FDE's are NOTHING like the airline training simulator)
On the contrary, this is the least of my worries :p
My real problem is, the landing lights of many Posky aircraft. My computer isn't very fluid on the frames. For that reason, I must keep my settings down moderately low. Whenever I turn on the landing lights on a Posky aircraft, the nasty landing light textures take away alot of performance (especially at night). Is there any way to remove those performance stripping landing light textures so that I can actually enjoy any night flight the same way that I can enjoy a daytime flight? Thank you :)
Oh, and please do not recommend payware as a solution. I am starting college soon, and cannot afford to waste such money. Thank you.

Eh.. I guess I accidentally added in an oxymoron. My fault. I meant to say that I aim for realism, though the Posky FDE's aren't very good.

Interesting comment that the Posky landing lights have a noticeable impact on your frame rates. I have a very modest machine and see no difference when they are on or off at night.
But perhaps I am misunderstanding you. By "loss of performance" I have assumed you mean a negative impact on Frame Rates. If they do impact FR on your system, why turn them on?
Wouldn't not turning the landing lights on have the same effect as removing the textures involved (if that is indeed how the landing lights are created)?
I agree. My system is not high end by any stretch of the imagination and I've not experienced any fps hit with Posky landing lights, or any others.
Does this happen at any airport? or airports in a certain area? or just one airport?

I'm having a similar problem with the Project Airbus and Project Fokker NAV lights. However, this happens only in my laptop (Intel IGP inside :p), I don't remember seeing this in any of the desktops I've ever used (which always had ATI or Nvidia inside). But, since my desktop is still packed, I'm interested in a solution for this... just in case I want (or "I have") to sim in my laptop (changing video card is not an option).
Curiously, I didn't see any FPS loss in my laptop flying the Posky 737-800.
Best regards from Colombia,
Luis Miguel

I believe the Landing Lights use the texture named Spotlight.bmp which should be in your main texture folder.
You can experiment by disabling that file (rename it spotlight.bmpx). However be aware that it will not be available, if needed, for any other aircraft etc. which call for it.

Exactly. The landing light textures have a negative impact on frames. I think I will try editing the spotlight file with a paint program, and see where that takes me. You do make a great point about "not turning them on", but honestly, how am I supposed to land at night without my landing lights turned on?

You are the one who inqured about "removing" the texture involved (in your original post). That is what triggerred my question about simply not turning them on.
Just what are your computer specifications?
It seems to me that if you are seeing a noticeable drop in FR and it is appently due to the use of one texture, then there is a more basic problem at play here.

That is just the thing. I am no tech guru. I couldn't tell you about my computer specs any better than I can tell you the president's shoe size. I just use a computer for simming and Facebook. I think I know my solution to the problem. When I turn the landing lights on from the 2d panel view, the frame rate is not affected. Since I do 95% of my flying from the panel view, I guess I will just have to stick with that.

Do you not have a receipt or Invoice showing the specifications of what you purchased?
At the very least you should be able to tell us what Operating System you are using - XP, Vista or Win 7.
If using XP you can use the procedure to find the "details" of your system:
Click on Programs, then Accessories, then System Information. A screen showing everything you ever wanted to know about your computer will be displayed.
I would assume Vista and Win 7 have a similar way to display such info.
