View Full Version : ORBX Scenery -- Superb

Since I just got through flying in the ORBX PNW/NRM sceneries again, with a friend, and we had a discussion about how few references we find to these sceneries, I thought I'd post a brief comment on how super these sceneries are.
The 10 meter mesh allows rolling terrain and jagged mountains like I've never before seen in FS, adding a hefty dose of "realism" to the scenery. Thoughtful little details such as concrete parking blocks with cars/pickups parked at various spots around airports; aircraft parked near hangars, on grass, etc.; dumpsters; houses near the fields; realistic layout of towns, complete with proper roads; occasional wonderful surprises such as a tractor or combine in a farm field; and many, many other seemingly small things that add up to a surprisingly real world.
I'm not in any way associated with the ORBX folks, except as a very happy customer, and it is only the fact that I'm STILL in awe of what they've done for the sim that prompted me to post this.
Of course I also want to thank ORBX (it'd be nice to see more areas of the Rockies, the midwest, etc. etc.) for such a marvelous product.
Just a side note: My friend I fly with is running this on a five year old machine, while mine is six months old. So it works on quite a range of hardware, if you're willing to compromise a bit on reduced settings.

Well Larry, your lucky. I get a crash to desk top every time over Seattle. Never fixed, even got banned from the orbx forum for "aggressive posting" since I have time to report back my findings. Wrote an honest review on customer experience on the FSS Store website, got banned for life from their forums and they took down my review. I guess they just want the gold stars on their refrigerator, as you would call it. Not another dime from me to Orbx. EVER. Last thing I bought was Walter Sutton's Farm -- never again another dime, and I had them all....
(Note: At time of banning, my issue was still not resolved and they like to blame it on hardware. I afford what I cand buy what I can, and they made me feel really cheap over it, so nothing more to them. We all can't afford the latest and greatest i7s, etc, what they say is ideal for it.)

Johnny, they are indeed very proud of their products, as they should be. There is no denying that at all. Don't let it get to you, there are legions of people that feel the same.

They have many products that work well on average machines, but they do have many 'showcase' products as well in which they've made it clear are not for the meek-computered. Ones with every building, bush, car, person......16CM textures...so on. This is not a bad thing at all, and any ill feelings towards not being able to run them can be dismissed as 'computer jealousy'. Don'tt be made at me, because I've only had a nice computer for a few months. Before that it was YEARS of not being able to run crap, and getting angry about it.
If they won't give you a refund, then you should endlessly bark up their tree.

Tig, the FS Store where I bought it DOESN'T Give refunds for downloads, and I'm quite frankly upset the way I was treated by the big man himself over there as well. Take the good reviews with the bad. It's the FSS Store's fault too that they have a system in place for a pick and choose reviews. If you can't suck it up, don't publish. That's the way I look at it.
It's not right -- I've spent well over 100.00 in airports and scenery on them, and no refund. Disgusting.
You shouldn't feel like you're slumming it either over what you can afford. That's how they made me feel. As I said, no more money to them, EVER.

I feel the same. My enjoyment of real flight is for the scenery, and it's products like this, that make simming worthwhile. It's another step closer to reality.

If you want reality go with Sim Savvy. They beat Orbx hands down, it is REAL that you get. Granted, no trees or what not like most photoreal terrain, but its the best that I've ever seen, and that IS reality. Not another step closer.

A+/Network+Johnny, I am strongly thinking about starting a site that will supplement blue sky and sim savvy scenery products. The idea is to start a community that completes placement of trees and scenery objects as well as lining up airports. If everyone did their hometown, we'd be set. You complete a few and download hundreds.

That does sound like an interesting idea Tig -- I know right now there's no way I could do my home town with the project I'm under going at the moment, but it does sound intresting. If you do get it going, let me know. It was just wrong of what Orbx did to me, that's why I'll never buy from them again. One thing I love about Sim Savvy is the Delete Runways option when you're in the air. Looks really good! :D

Didn't know I was opening a can of worms. To see the replies here, it would seem no one else thinks much of ORBX. Guess I'll keep my opinions to myself, in the future.
So Long!

No Larry, definitely Share them, others may not know what you know -- it's just my experience I was bringing to light and cautioning you if you have issues to not "aggressively post". I guess they can't stand the heat either from negative reviews. :(

In reality, ORBX is quite famous in the FSX world, despite a few negative postings, here. Some of the best & most creative videos on U-Tube in regards to flight simming, are produced with ORBX as the background.

I purchased ORBX pnw and the north Rocky Mntns, and I can say I am truly impressed, especially flying around the Vancouver BC area, which is my general area. It has made a huge, impressive difference to the visuals. My only bitch tho, is that they all went on sale about a week after I bought them.

There was a similar project set up to enhance Horizon's photo scenery in the UK with a range of autogen trees, buildings, specimen objects etc. It was very successful and resulted in the "UKVFR" library that is used by a lot of freeware addon (including OZx). Sadly the group has disbanded, but much of the scenery is still available across the various download sites. Anyhow, if you get a similar project going for Sim Savvy scenery, I hope it does really well. :)
