An interesting piece by Chip Barber that shines a light on the "saturation" factor of current FS technology. I agree that many of us have come to be a little blase' about our sim experience now that many, if not most of the things that we used to only dream of back in FS98 have become reality.
While it is certainly harder to find the "wow factor" these days, be assured that it is still there to be had. Unfortunately, freeware add-on's just aren't able to keep up with what FSX can offer but if you are willing and/or able to invest in some commercial releases, you will be richly rewarded.
If pushing buttons in your PMDG, Level-D or Capt. Sim procedural sim has gotten a little stale, try loading up one of the top-notch GA planes from Carenado, RealAir or Eaglesoft and do a little "back to basics" flying from any of the ORBX PNW airports (especially the new "Walter Sutton's Private Strip") and prepare to have your socks knocked off.
After you get your socks back on, try out the A2A Accusim B-17 or J-3 Cub packages and see how long your boredom lasts! If you still want to push a few buttons, Fly the PMDG Jetstream JS-4100 into Aerosoft's Dutch Harbor and a few of the other included Aleutian airfields.
Fear not... There is still plenty of excitement to be had out there!
