Just wondering what the difference between these two is? Other than the occasional flickering textures with DirectX 10, I couldn't tell the difference.

There is a difference in my game when i play with that setting. I do like some of the dx10 preview settings but in some area's the water can look odd.

Firstly, DX9 and DX10 is to almost all intents irrelevant for FSX. It's actually a DX8-based game, with a nod toward DX9.

Add the FSX DX10 Preview, which is nothing more than a simple summary of how far the ACES team had got before the project got canned, and there is plenty of room for confusion.

Unless the `advantages` of DX10 physically demonstrate a better result for you in FS, stay in DX9. You aren't losing anything... check youtube for a couple of comparison vids.

It would be useful to hear a little more about DX8-9-10 so we know exactly what's best for us. I have problems at times with textures on FSX-only aircraft and read somewhere that DX9/10 utilise incompatible texture formats.

Add the FSX DX10 Preview, which is nothing more than a simple summary ... in my game this seems to switch different aircraft textures on and off but I guess now that it doesn't actually switch DX10 on and off. Do I need to actually re-install DX9 if I prefer that? Is there a link to explain all this please?

Hi,

There is no options connected with DX8 and no reason to even discuss DX 8 in regards to FS9 or FSX.

DX9 is the standard and is installed with XP, Vista, and Win 7.

DX10 Preview has already been discussed.

There is no "whats best for us". It is whats best for individual users with what they have installed in their own FSX installation. If textures disappear, turn Off DX10 Preview and restart FSX. That is an option in FSX on the Graphics screen.

You don't need to touch DX, that is part of your Windows and you can't uninstall that anyway.

No, there is no link to explain all of this!

Thanks,

The main problem in DX10 is the lack of antialiasing. This can be overcome to some extent if you use a high resolution (assuming yur monitor can suport it).

I have used DX 10 on occasions and it seems smoother, I can use bloom and get better framerates.

However, quite a few of my addon sceneries and airports in particular simply won't play with DX10.

Some have also reported problems with addon aircraft too.

With DX10, the bloom, the clouds and the sky are alot better as it the general lighting. I have overcome some of this by using the enb mod, though I needed to play around with the settings a bit.

I use dx10 because for some strange reason I get a large boost in frame rates. Has anyone found a fix for the runway texture flickering yet?

Have to check out this FPS boost for myself when I get a chance.

Speaking of flickering, found this thread (http://forums1.avsim.net/topic/267998-dx10-runwaytaxiway-flickering-fix/) over at Avsim and there was someone who has seemed to fix the flickering with the airports. You'll need to download the Airport Design Editor to do it though. I heard some people have already started working on the flickering for some airports.

Hi Teisco,

Yes there has been a reason posted on other forums and maybe this forum. It is something to do with changing the type of texture of the taxiway "Concrete V Asphalt" to match the Runway texture I am sure. If you Google something along those lines you should be able to find it.
Here is a link http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17921
Kind Regards

Bernie.

I ran the DXDIAG and it's showing DX-11. I've got the DX-10 turned off in my settings. I was thinking I was running DX-9.

Should I somehow roll back to DX-9?

The latest DirectX version (11) includes previous DirectX versions, which will be used if a program calls for it.
As a side note, DirectX 10 and now 11 require a DirectX 10 or 11 compatible video card, of which your 8800GTS isn't, in order to display Directx 10 or 11 sims/games in DirectX 10 or 11 'mode'.
Keep your DirectX install up to date and forget about it.

Although I didn't see any flickering textures at JFK, there wasn't much of an FPS boost. Maybe 1-2 FPS or so. I normally get around 16-19 FPS sitting in the VC. Then again, I was testing with my PMDG 747-8i. That's usually what I fly with anyways.

of which your 8800GTS isn't

Just to be clear, your 8800GTS is a DX10 card, but not DX11.

When I added the edited airport into FSX, I put it in the Addon Scenery folder. I wonder if that's where it's supposed to go in order to get the FPS boost or whether you're supposed to put it in the folder where the stock JFK airport is? It's basically a recompiled version of the stock airport.

Just how long ago (and how close were you) when you got 'exposed' to the magnetite? (HeHe).

Of course it goes under the Addon Scenery folder, in it's own folder(s), which you then go activate. Your 'recompiled version' for the airport will have higher priority than any 'stock' files, and thus they won't conflict-as long as there are not any duplicate (name) bgl's. Just my 2 cents.

I'll try putting the scenery file in it's own folder tomorrow instead of in the Addon Scenery folder.

Thanks loki, I was thinking it was but didn't bother to check until now.
