FSX ran fine on Vista 32bit machine. Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q660, NVIDIA GeForce 9800 gt video card, 4 gig RAM.
Computer crashed, hard disk wiped, Vista reinstalled but now the DVD drive can't read FSX deluxe disks. All it finds is a readme file which says - This disk contains a UDF file system and requires an OS that supports the ISO-13346 UDF file spec.
I've googled around and at first thought it could be NERO 8 which was interfering with the reading of the disk but comlete removal of the software didn't solve the problem. I have a small netbook with XP which can read the disks so they are not corrupt. The DVD drive on the desktop works perfectly with all other software disks that I have had to reinstall.
Any ideas? I have a 7 year old grandson who is really missing his flying time.

Thanks for your reply,
I think I've got the latest DVD drivers but will check. Definitely not a pirated copy unless the shop sold me one. This DVD drive worked before. The only difference is a new hard drive and a new install of Vista. Incidently, not my copy. The computer repair shop installed Vista without my Vista disk. Is this a clue?
Update: Yes definitely got latest driver for DVD.
Do you have any other software that makes use of the DVD drive? Nero isn't the only one that may cause problems. Have you also tried disabling your anti-virus (physically disconnect from the internet first if you aren't using a hardware router)?

Hi,
I always disable virus protection etc, before trying to install software. I can't find any other burning software installed. But will have another look. Who knows?
It may not be burning software, but could be a media player program like the InterVideo one mentioned in the Microsoft link.

Hi,
I've now uninstalled every program except virus protection etc. and cleared all my data. The machine is as free of clutter as possible. I can't find any other burning software except obviously Windows' own. However, I have just tried to format a DVD and a CD and the software tries and then a window comes up saying - Windows was unable to complete the format.
Also, when I put a blank DVD in the drive it does not bring up the dialogue box giving me options to burn files to disk etc. Back to the computer shop do you reckon? Although at the moment they are blaming me for updating drivers and I think this is going to cost me some more.

I know I had an issue with my dvd drive not showing up with the latest nvidia nforce sata drivers for my motherboard, might be something along those lines for your intel mobo.

If you do go back to the shop, take the FSX disks along and don't let 'em send you on your way till the drive can read them... ;)

Sorry for the delay in replying. I took the computer back and once again windows was reinstalled but when I got the machine back it looked as though there was a virus on it! With only the OS on the machine, the first thing I did was load Kaspersky and it warned me that there was possibly malicious script on board. I've been talking to the Kaspersky folk over the last couple of days who assure me that all is OK.
So I've finally loaded Flight Sim and am still no wiser as to what was wrong in the first place and what was possibly wrong in the second place.
Don't you just love computers!!!!!
Thank you so much to you all for your time and replies. At least my husband and grandson can now get back to their flying.

Hi,
Please help me.
I have this exact problem and after probing the internet for over an hour I'm none the wiser.
I have uninstalled NERO, disabled antivirus etc and had no look.
Taking this PC back is not an option, no time.
Im running an ACER with Win7. I made sure the disk was fine by checking it upstairs and lone behold it works on an XP.
Please help,
Jacob

The FSX discs are formatted in UDF which the Windows UDF volume reader is able to use. You have a 3rd party program on your computer that is preventing the UDF volume reader from running.

"I have uninstalled NERO, disabled antivirus etc and had no luck"
Nope, nothing else there that I can see.

I run an Acer desktop which was supplied with Vista, and so much junk came pre-installed I went and got me a new copy of Vista, wiped the disc and re-installed the OS from the new discs. I have since installed FSX with no bother. Win 7 is very much like Vista, but quicker in operation, so what I said still stands, you have something on your computer that is preventing the Microsoft UDF volume reader from seeing the FSX discs.
