View Full Version : Rise of Flight
Had it on pre-order at Gogamer.com since the 15th of June, since it was suppose to release on the 17th...but got pushed back to the 24th. Just got it in my mailbox yesterday and installed and played a little this morning.
I am really liking it and looking forward to some oldschool guns only dog fights online. Graphics is amazing on it and I only have it installed on my laptop since my gaming PC is in pieces atm. Still lots of bugs and weird stuff to deal with, but I think it is worth the effort f you like flight sims.
If running vista, I would turn off UAC for the install (and back on after) otherwise some needed installs will not work. My laptop only displays 1440x900 and they made default resolution higher then that, so it cuts off the screen and you won't be able to see or use the menu buttons. Going into settings will have blank screens for changing the resolution, you'll have to go into the game folder and find the settings CFG file and manually change it there to match your computers.
You only get two airplanes!! They will make more planes later...but you will have to buy them as add-on's (man, those Russians are becoming more and more capitalist everyday). Ok, fine, but strange that some of the single flight missions I tried to fly use "default" airplanes other then the two that comes with the game...which are the Spad 13 and the Fokker D.VII .
My Track IR5 works perfectly with it except for some bug that randomly resets the zoom in/out. I am only using a simple Logitech 3D pro with it since it's on the laptop, but on the official forums, seen a few peope with CH and cougers full blown set-up (stick, throttle, pedals). Not sure how well those work, but so far, the throttle lever on my 3D pro is reversed no matter how I set it up on the settings.

Ordered Rise and Track IR just today, good to hear. Maybe you have to unlock other planes in career mode?
That was what I was thinking as well, but no. It was confirmed by the devs and others on their official site, you only get the two planes I mentioned earlier. New planes will be coming later (@July 7th) and will cost extra $$ to add-on. They said...you don't need the add-on planes to play the game, but as I said, I tried flying the sngle missions and was not allowed to do so with the two planes provided. I am trying to look beyond that, since the game is otherwise pretty fun and good graphics and you don't even need a hardcore computer to run it. I think my laptop (t9300cpu...2.5ghz, GTS8800, 4gigs ram, vista ultimate) is maxxed out on settings and runs it smooth.
One thing that pisses me off though is that you need to be online in order to play it, since the keycode they give you in order to play the game is stored online. It does not matter if you just wanted to play a single player mission, career mode or anything, you need to be online in order for the game to just start.
Sounds like they are shooting for a Steam inclusion. Oh well, I haven't flown a good WW1 dogfight sim since 1990's Dynamix Red Baron. CFS 1's Sopwith and add-ons was ok for slow dogfighting but the shooting system always seemed a bit arcade-ish for me.

I'm beta testing it, well technically I still am even though it's been released they are still developing, fixing, and enhancing the sim and it's content. Their are some big changes and improvements coming, but what I've seen so far is really pretty impressive to me, especially the physics, damage models, sounds, and the visuals are nice too. Yes there are some rough edges for the moment, but I've seen the development team behind the scenes, and feel comfortable saying that the issues people see now will most probably be gone pretty soon. . .but of course that's only my hunch.
No matter what, it's an awesome flight sim, and we've been having a real good time flying it. The addon aircraft are each very unique in character, with a tangibly different feel. There are subtleties to the flight physics that real pilots will appreciate such as adverse yaw, gyroscopics, torque effects, propwash, realistic taildragger handing including ground loop character etc. They also model wake turbulence and propwash effects on the airmass which is pretty cool.

I have two joysticks. Microsoft sidewinder which works OK with Rise Of Flight.
However, when use my Logitech Extreme 3d I have no roll control(X axis) on takeoff.
I have also updated the driver on the Logitech with no change.
I thought that there might be a conflict with the microsoft program, so I uninstalled the sidewinder, but still no change with the x axis on Logitech.
I also went into the input settings and programmed each axis with the rof program. This also did not correct the problem.
Any ideas out there???? Thanks.
:)
I'm very tempted to buy this, always loved the older WW1 titles, but after spending an hour last night going through user posts on various forums, its seems this sim is very much unfinished and unpolished.
The lack of reliable multi-play servers is quite worrying.
Fair play to those that bought it already and are enjoying it, but I'm going to sit on the fence a while longer and see what develops.
I've got plenty of other Simulations to enjoy in the mean time.

Glad I didn't buy it for just two planes and add on Aircraft for $. At least FSX and others by Microsoft has alot more planes to choose than that - that's not worth it for the price their asking for, and if everything else seems unrealiable like the multiplayer, where's the fun in that?

The fun is in the excellent flight models, damage models and detailed aircraft modeling/functionality. Neoqb also gave two more aircraft to the community free of charge, so you could say they listen, something another (now ex) flight sim producer failed to learn after 25+ years of loyal followers.
Rise of Flight does have it's problems though. The UI is a clunker, the online play is severely limited in scope at the moment with very few reliable servers, the single player action/campaign is also very rudimentary and you have to be 'online' to use even single player, something I personally hate. Rise of Flight as released struck me as very 'beta' for content, while the actual program compatibility and coding works very well.
On the bright side though, the mission builder is being figured out - with new multi/single player scenarios being introduced by the community daily. The patching system works and they already have patched a few problems. The frame rates while in a 20 aircraft furball are very good and this sim does use all your processor cores along with your video card for pretty good realism/graphics.
This is a sim that has long term potential, the basics are there, as the company and the community add to it time will tell.

There are 4 flyables included, the N.28, Spad XIII, Albatross DVa and Fokker DVII. The N17 is available as an addon for $7.62 USD, and many more aircraft are coming down the pipe.
All my screenshots where taken in multiplayer: http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?t=199104
I'm sure it isn't everyone's idea of a good time, and yes there are some unfinished aspects of the sim, but nothing to prevent anyone from having a great time with it. The physics are the best I've flown, the graphics are very nice, the damage models are unmatched, the systems are simple but high fidelity, and I think anyone who can appreciate those things would only be hurting themselves not trying it. Hopefully a demo will be made available so people can see that for themselves.

Cant i just activate online then go play offline?
You have to be online to start the game. The software 'checks in' every time you start it.
On another note - they had a 500+MB patch today that fixed tons of issues, although the 'content' is still rudimentary at best. I have heard hosting a multi-player now works for those behind routers, I will be trying that later tonight.
I so wish FSX had this game engine, performance without pulling your hair out and depleting your bank account. :)

Any of you guys check out Over Flanders Fields: Between Heaven and Hell?
Our game comes with 39 flyable planes, more robust scenery, a huge Dynamic Campaign engine, and is chocked deep full of WWI history in the air and on the ground.
If you have not heard of us, come and take a look, at www.overflandersfields.com. Our sim uses the Combat Flight Sim 3 graphics engine only and in no way resembles anything close to CFS3.
With sounds all around you, AI in planes that are out to add your death to their score, hundreds of Ace skins based on profiles from many WWI historians and pilot's written accounts in accredited books... hundreds of squadrons all based in historical locations, a ‘moving Front Line’, and tons more effects and content… we compiled not only a really deep and atmospheric simulation of WWI air combat, but a living museum as well.
As many of our fans and reviewers have described it.... you don't fly OFF, you live it.
So if WWI combat simulation is what you are looking for, come and check us out and add us to your game library. Fly 39 planes from the French, British, American and German stockpiles ranging from the Fokker E.III in late 1914 to the USAS Spad XIII's in late 1918.
All the best,
OvS
OFF Dev Team.

Does it require constant online or just one activation like FSX , other words can it be played offline if not i dont want it.

Dogwalker,
No, OFF does not require online connection to fly singleplayer. Multiplayer flight, online, is an option as well.
How is multi-player now for RoF? I'm thinking of buying this at the end of the month now.
Are the servers reliable, is there always a lot of players online, does it matter where in the world you are and where you connect from?
How is it for lag ETC? I'm on ADSL 3GB connection that is fine for everything else I've tried multiplayer wise, but have read that this sim is rough about the edges.
Cheers.
In my opinion the multi-player is still very basic at best. It is basically a 4 vs 4 or 6 vs 6 etc. situation. Unfortunately Rise of Flights limited market penetration means very few are online at any given time.
For the last few weeks since the patch that made multi-player actually possible for most, the amount of servers and players online actually playing is very low as to be almost non-existent. I have checked server and players daily at US and Euro prime times, finding at most less than 40 people (being honest here, that is a generous observation) spread among 6 to 8 servers. Checking in at off times results in even less people online, which is logical, averaging around 1 to 10 people or so.
The two actual times I have tried multi-player it worked fairly well, I'm on an average American DSL account (think 6Mb/s), but the variety and options for online play still remain extremely limited. Frankly its a catch 22 Neoqb (pronounced neo-cube, the developer) finds itself in - need more people to actually buy the sim and play but people are not buying and joining in because there is very little content to use and not enough people online to make it worth buying.
Someone on another forum put it adeptly, RoF is a fine flight sim and a terrible WW I sim.
Personally I'm waiting to see how it all plays out long term. If Neoqb adds a decent amount of historical single player content and develops more online scenarios and options, and they do it in the next 6 months max, then RoF stands a very good chance of dodging the earlier issues bad PR and becoming all that it can be. If not and they rely on the community to provide the content, it will probably take years to match a similar popularity that IL-2 Sturmovik enjoys. From what I hear RoF provides a robust mission editor, the problem being there is no manual at this time and language difficulties.
Edit: checking just now, 8:43 pm Eastern Standard time (US) there are 2 people online playing in Great Britain. Thats it.
Checking again 10:00 pm EST there are now 6 online playing. This is a typical weekday scenario, weekends you will see a few more people on.
Thanks for the feedback.
I'll probably buy it end of month and see how it goes, I hope support for it picks up and that multi-play can be as busy as other sims.
Cheers.
Well ... I went ahead and took the plunge and bought the download this morning from Aerosoft, £32, only to now see it can be bought from Direct To Drive for £24 here in the UK!!!

Oh well, jobs done now, just transferring the exe from my Lappy to my I7 rig, then hopefully the install and registration will go smoothly.
Thanks again for the heads up, Paxx, I guess its one of those What came first, Chicken or Egg moments, if we all sit on the fence waiting like I was doing, then it will never take off.
Cheers.

But If I want to play single player, the system checks on the internet everytime that I start the game?, thats the only reason why I still don´t buy this game, can I play this game after the online registration without internet?

So good bye to Rise of Flight.
So good bye to Rise of Flight.
You should re-consider, the internet connection thing is really no big deal, you like me will use more bandwith with occasional internet posts than Rise of Flight will ... you need to be connected to post and view the Internet right?
Its been a busy week, have my new I7 build for FSX completed and fully tweaked, also took the plunge and bought Black Shark, but for me, Rise of Flight is a keeper and I'm really looking forward to getting deeper into it.
Cheers.
Its a dvd so why do you need internet to play it? i dont get it.. I dont connect my gaming computer online. Why make a game that must be online?
