Two ways: you can record flights for playback using the utility built into flightsim. It's really easy to use. BUT, if you want to have it as an actual video file, so you can put it on YouTube or whatever, it's a little more complex. FRAPS is a good application for this and many other things.
I'm not entirely sure how you'd set up a button on the X52 to start recording, you might want to try setting a keyboard shortcut in FRAPS( or other application) and then putting that in in the proggramming software.

Best program to use would be Flight Sim recorder which could be found here http://www.fs-recorder.net/
If your going to make a video lets say to post on youtube or somewhere then you will need a movie program and also FRAPS. What you will need to do is film your flight using the FS Recorder first. The replay it as traffic or replay in general and then use fraps to record that. Its a long process but if you like some more detailed in on how to do it then email our video guy here at dozer@fsxblueangels.com he'll get back to you and might be able to take you step by step. Hope this helps.

FS recorder is pretty good, but the files it creates can only be used within flight simulator itself, so does not create a standalone video which can be viewed on YouTube for example.
Google FRAPS and you will find a nifty video recording and screenshot capture tool, the screencapture bit is free, but you need to pay the shareware fee to open the video capture past 30 sec.
Hope this helps

I hate to ask this, but is there an opensource or otherwise freeware program that can convert the FS video file to a video file that can be played elsewhere such as youtube?
What is a good opensource video editor, I shouldn't be lazy, I should look up Studio Ubuntu's contents and see what they use for a video editor and sound editor (sound not soy editor darn type-o's) , it must be available for Ubuntu or Mint, where I could do full video editing. And at the same time I could also look for a good sound editor. I prefer LinuxMint, it's not without its' drawbacks but it's very nice any way, it's excellent.
I got Ubuntu Studio but tried installing it and it seemed archaic and had problems with the install unlike Ubuntu or Mint for example. I'm on a very tight budget but when I start a project I spend a lot of time on it and 30 seconds with fraps doesn't sound good.
Would a full video editing program be able to convert the MS FS video file into a standard video file?
Hi,
I am new to fsx but have Movie Edit Pro which I use for movie making etc.
This programme has the ability to capture/record from the computer screen.
I have used it in fs2002.
Go to views and open a new view box, like picture in picture, and record this smaller picture.
MEP is a bit expensive to be used just for this, but is a good program if you are into editing your home movies. Other programs are available!

Don't know any way to do a direct conversion, but there are some screen cap programs out there. I don't have much experience, and haven't got as good looking shots as with FRAPS, but you might try VirtualDub and CamStudio open source.
