View Full Version : Ultimate Defrag Problem

My Ultimate Defrag 2008 has suddenly stopped working. When starting the program, I instantly get a Windows message "Ultimate defragmenter has stopped working - Windows is looking for a solution to the problem etc...", but hasn't found any. I have made no computer changes since it last worked, and un/reinstalling makes no difference.
I am not aware of any time limit on the license, am I wrong?
Trying to access Tech Support at Disktrix, I am faced with requirements for technical info for my internet server, that I don't have, including my password that I have no intention of providing. I have tried to contact them with an ordinary email, but it was not answered, and neither was it returned as undeliverable. I have run into this ridiculous complication with a few other companies, but fortunately most operate with normal email. Is this an attempt to reduce their support workload? Or maybe they are no longer in business?
Can anyone suggest a way to obtain support short of sending a snail mail?

I run UD2008, haven't had any issues with it.
Try email@example.com for the email address. It took a few days but they replied to my question.

Thanks for the info. I already tried that with a direct email, but have received no answer. I will try again.
You should have received an automated response that they got your initial email. If not, they may not have got your email, or their response was blocked by spam filtering somewhere along the way (Hotmail, Gmail or an ISP's filtering for example).
Where were they asking for your own server passsword? The only password I have been asked to provide on their site was the one I set up when I purchased UD2008.

Thanks for taking an interest, loki. I did not receive a response when addressing an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, neither did I get an "undeliverable" message, so it must have been lost along the way, as you suggest.
However, if you click on this address on their website, you get an email form to fill out, it then asks for your name and email address, but you are not done yet.
Next you get a new field called "Set up e-mail server", with the following questions
"Incoming e-mail server type:"
"Incoming mail (POP 3 or IMAP) server:"
"Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:"
The next field is called "Internet Mail Logon", and it asks
"Type the account name and password your Internet service provider has given you:"
That is where I gave up. I did not know the answers to the technical questions, and I had no intention of answering the last question. I have run into this questionaire a few times on other websites, but most companies will respond to an ordinary email. I am just wondering what the purpose of all these complications is.
Their link must not have been working. Just enter the email address "email@example.com" (no "www") into your email program directly. They don't have any need for that information and I don't see why they would be asking.

From what you've it sounds like when you clicked on the link on their website their server is asking you to use a different email program than what you are using.eg they use Outlook Express and you use Netscape or something else. What you are seeing is your computer trying to set up a connection using the program they are using. That is where the info re pop and smtp servers and the password from your isp comes into play. I have run across this quite often as I still use Netscape. Just use the address in your own email program.

Meanwhile, is Ultimate Defrag supposed to work with Vista 64? It seems I have read that it does in one source and that it will soon in others.
The main defrag portion of the program does work under Vista x64. It's only the boot time defrag for moving the MFT etc. that is not compatible with x64 systems right now.

For general info, I never did get UD 2008 to work, I have written it off. It is like a "poisoned pill" has entered my computer. After working fine for a while, I suddenly got an immediate message "Ultimate defragmenter has stopped working - Windows is looking for a solution to the problem etc..." when trying to start the program. I tried to uninstall and reinstall both the older version, the 2008 version (I have licenses for both, but without the program opening no chance of entering them). I tried to run UD in safe mode, and I tried to download a new trial version - all with the same result - won't open. My computer is clean, defragged and well maintained, and all other programs function normally. Tech Support at Disktrix has not been of any help.
I mention this in the hope that someone out there may have a good idea of what could cause this.

UD runs fine for me in XP, but just hangs indefinitely in Vista 64. I have read that support is basically non-existant. Too bad, it is cool when it works.

Yes - it is (or was) a cool program and I miss it, but I dare not even buy a new one, as I expect it would not run either. I am surprised that tech support have not heard of this problem before, and/or could offer some ideas as to the cause.
All I got was the suggestion that a recent Vista update or a new graphics driver may have caused it, but I told them that the problem still occurred even in safe mode, which I believe eliminates the driver, and if a general Vista update caused such a problem, they should have heard about it from many others. I got no reply to that message.
