Every once in awhile... I notice that this file is trying to download to my computer. (Dial Up) I Googled it today and all seems to be...... NOT quite what it seems. This kb403742 IS NOT an MS Update. It's something from ADOBE. It seems to be suspect.

Anyone have any ideas? I have Adobe 8.1.2 already. SPOFF

SPOFF,

kb403742 sounds remarkably like a Microsoft knowledge base article number. A Google of that term came up with this link ...

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb403742

so it's probably safe to let it do whatever it wants to do, which is most likely a security update to the Adobe pdf reader.

Mike: Yup, I read that. I does "seem to be" some sort of security update. Further looks at Google leave me less.....impressed. The original ADOBE 8.1.2 was about 127MB acording to my Add/Remove file. I have NO IDEA how I would have downloaded that big a file. (Dial Up) I remember downloading Adobe 8 however......just not.... 127MB.

I have noticed over the few short years I have been noticing this stuff:.... Sometimes files CHANGE SIZE without warning. SPOFF

EDIT: kb403742....is NOT an MS update. A little "sucker" thingy from Adobe. Notice the lower case kb Vs KB.

SPOFF,

Hm-m-m-m. Is there any chance that this actually originated from some other site? 127 MB or whatever sounds like a possible trojan horse.

Where is loki when we need him? :)

That could be the correct file size as it could include other langauge packs, Adobe Photoshop Elements Starter Edition and other stuff.

It's been a while since I've used Adobe Reader though. It was getting quite large and slow to open so I replaced it with PDF-XChange Viewer. It's free and opens much faster without the need to have components launched when Windows starts (the adobe_sl.exe or reader_sl.exe task).
