rudder,

By any chance are you on Windows Vista?

I ask because Vista does not support the old Windows .chm-based help system, and only a vendor update of the product help would make things work.

Your problem might also be a Vista permissions thing. Search for posts by n4gix, Bill Leaming, and you'll come up with some definitive information on that subject.

A note to Windows software developers ...

I ran into this issue while developing AirBoss (TM). The solution is to work with Helpmatic Pro by Harbinder Ghag. The resulting help stuff that you build will run on both XP and Vista.

 Hi Mike, thanks for your reply I am using win. xp with the sp2. The strange thing is this comp. never goes on the web! I use another comp. for web work, and transfer anything I need over to it. The comp. I use for the web work has not been infected, If in fact that is what has happened. I have found some ref. to this in other places, but no cure as of yet.

rudder,

Try downloading and using the free version of AVG, which can be found at grisoft.com This is a very effective but benign anti-virus program. But don't be surprised if you need to turn if off while you're using FS.

Similarly, you should try the freeware Spybot available at safer-networking.org. (Be sure to update it before running it.)

If the combination of these tools fails to find anything you can be reasonably confident that your problem is not a virus or spyware.

Another thing you might try is reinstalling the offending application. If that doesn't work you could try going out to the Microsoft website and downloading a fresh copy of the XP help system. If you can't find it, let me know. I think I have a copy lying around and could email or ftp it to you.
