Today I bought European Air War by Microprose. Here is a little comparison
between that sim and CFS for anyone interested.
Both sims have really good looking graphics, however CFS graphics are richer in
color and generally more pleaing to the eye. However the EAW trees and cities
are rendered very well. (You fly over any populated areas and have hundreds of
houses and buildings, and there are entire forests made up of the trees which
we only see at CFS airfields). Frame rate in EAW with all settings on high is
about 10-25 (233mhz 64 ram 12meg voodoo2), and in CFS varies from 7-35
depending on how many planes there are. In EAW there are many more planes in a
mission (I saw probably 30-50 Luftwaffe bombers over London)and the framerate
remains constant. Explosions and damage look fantastic in EAW, however it only
takes one burst of ammo to blow up almost any plane when you are very far away,
which is not so real. I made one pass through the German bombers over London
in my Mk1 Spitfire, and downed seven bombers while sustaining minimal damage.
Kind of takes the fun out of a hard earned kill! In CFS the bombers can shoot
you up pretty bad, but also miss quite often - much better artificial
inteligence. Shooting down a plane in CFS is incredible, it looks just like
gun camera footage on the history channel. Also people say CFS, moves too slow.
Untrue- lets not forget we are also moving at the same relative speed as our
opponent. In EAW the planes just move too fast - its not as fun. Bailing out
is more real in EAW - you can't do it below 3000 feet. In CFS I successfully
bailed right before I hit the ground. Lastly, the flight models. As we know
Microsoft takes pride in how realistic their flight models are. They should.
EAW is simplified so that you really don't have to know how to fly the plane
you are in, you only need to know the basics of flight.
For anyone trying to decide which to buy - I would say CFS if your system can
handle it. You need a similar system for EAW anyway. The diehard sim
enthusiast would probably want both sims as both have their strong points and
their weak points.
