Hi everybody ! I've just received here in France a copy of the american CFS
version. First : the installation was VERY VERY VERY hard and long (got CD
troubles too). Second : with my 233Mhz/96Mo,Virge3D/4Mo, frame rate is VERY
VERY VERY poor :( , and all the 3D stuff seems to be color-inverted. Smoke
appears in black squares, trees on the ground appear in black squares too, and
on high-altitude, SKY IS BLACK !!! Has anyone the same problem ?
Well, CFS just provides me great screenshots...

Is your version of Windows the French version or US English version? If your
versions don't match there can be some problems with alot of MS software.
Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card(s). If you
are in Win'98 DirectX 6.0 also might have problems. DirectX 6 was just
designed to work better with Win'98.

I haven't had any frame rate problems but I have a 400MHz PII and Matrox G200
board. With maximum detail at 1024x768 I get around 25fps minimum.

Good Luck. It's really not a bad game, just needs more machine that the
requirements say and is sensitive to drivers.

I had the same problem with FS98 before I got my voodoo2 card... I got black
boxes around most objects and smoke. I was using an ATI Rage pro 3d card on a
233Mhz w/64Mb Ram. You might need new drivers for your existing card, but you
should probably get a voodoo2 or a TNT

Well, I have a french Win95 version. I had already installed DirectX 6.0, and I
let the installation replace it - as suggested. Should I re-install my previous
(non CFS) DirectX 6.0 or is it the same ? I must tell you that my video card is
a 2D/3D card... I can obtain 3D mode with it (great with FS98), but I think
that's not the best way. I'm going to get a REAL 3D-accelerator card. But which
one ? And what about those black squares and the black sky ??? Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot, Joe ! But I got a question : is the Voodoo2 you're talking about
the 3d monster board ?

I am using a Creative 3D Blaster Voodoo2 w/12megs - It is very similar to the
Monster 3D, and apparently they perform the same.

With your original DirectX 6.0 installation there were two options. One was
the DirectX 6 only, the other included updated drivers (for use with Win'95).
I'm not sure how well the DX6 drivers worked with Win'95. I switched to '98
before upgrading to DX6. I've seen messages in different places saying they
didn't work very well in '95.

If you don't use a program like SquawkBox and always fly full screen a 3D card
like a Voodoo2 is definitely the way to go. You'll be using a totally
different set of drivers so the black squares and sky shouldn't show up. Those
boxes shouldn't be there at all. The best thing I can suggest there for 2D is
to make sure you have the latest drivers.

Good luck.

I do not remember where (possibly on 3Dfx FAQ site, or FS98 FAQ), but I read
once that such problems could come from the separator. In Europe, et
particulierement en France, the separator is ",". In the US it is "." and ","
is used to mark one thousand. One thousand is written 1.000,00 in french but
1,000.00 in US english. It can make a hell of a difference when it comes to
defining certain parameters in the files used by CFS or FS98. Perhaps it would
be worth looking this way before you buy a whole new system...
As for a 3D accelerator, I am not sure there is a big difference between the
different cards running with the same chip. I have a Voodoo2 card 12 MB(STB
black magic) and it works great. On their box, Diamond claim they have a better
frame rate with the monster II (94 fps vs 93.3 fps). I am not sure .7 fps is
worth the extra $30. Verifie la virgule, achete une Voodoo2 12 MB, mais prend
la moins chere. Bonne chance.
