Hi, folks!
After waiting with baited breath and much anticipation for MSCFS to hit the
store shelves, I got my copy on Oct. 31st - luckily, no installation glitches
as I've been reading about!
After installing it and running it several times, changing the graphics and
scenery settings to get frame rates up to a useable level, I've come to the
conclusion that it's just not a useable/flyable simulation at this point. Sad
to say that my Pentium 233/16 Meg RAM, 24X CD, etc. apparently just isn't beefy
enough to get some decent frame rates above 6-10 fps!! FS98 runs beautifully
and I get some fast frame rates, but CFS apparently needs to go back to the
drawing boards to increase it's frame rates so that it can become a
USEABLE/FLYABLE product!
Sorry to say Microsoft, you were too quick to get the product out instead of
getting all of the bugs out of it first! :(
Jackie...Well, I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but you didn't
say what video setup you're using. FS98 and CFS both need really fast video
(read that 3D) cards to perform well. I have CFS on a 200mmx / 64mb / Riva 128
(Viper 330) and get frame rates just as good as FS98. If you're running in 2D,
and I've heard guys with PII-400's and 2d cards complain of frame rate, you
should expect verrrry slow frame rates. One other thing - 16mb is not really
enough to even run WIN95 very well. Bring your system up to 64mb (at least) and
you'll see marked improvement. But don't neglect the video. Nothing at all
wrong with CFS.

I totally agree! I would have much rather Microsoft say " ok, lets go over
this and work some things out first and put it on hold for another month."
The potential is there but if MS isn't careful some of these other software
companies are gonna catch up. (which they already have) This new sim FLY! is
gonna come out begging of next year and they are tweaking the hell out of it
from what I hear. Look out Mr. Gates. :-) Anyway, The fact that you can import
from FS98 is good (only if they get it to work right) but these other companies
are gonna start doing the same, so I guess we will see.

Larry...I have absolutely no love for MS, but don't count your chickens before
they hatch! I just spent 2 days doing an exhaustive test of the Microprose
'European Air War" demo. If they release that mess with the flight models as
they currently stand, you're gonna hear howling from flight sim folks all over
everywhere. Example - try to land the FW190. You'll find that thing will
accelerate with wheels down, flaps down, engine idling, in a climb! I guess you
never suffered through the intial release of Sierra's Pro Pilot? Those flight
models, terrible as they were, are lots better than Microprose.
I don't know about FLY, FUIII, and Pro Pilot 99. Maybe someone, someday will
get it all right. CFS, IMHO, isn't that far off.

Err, Uhm, your machine without a 3D card is a MS bug? On my P200, 64meg, 512
cache it runs fine. Go get yourself some memory and a Monster 3D card while
you are at the store. Then give it a try. What you are complaining about is
not a "bug" just a machine that doesn't have any room to spare after loading up
windows in 12 of those 16 megs of ram.

Accelerate with wheels down, flaps down and engine idling in a climb?
*LOL* Sounds like some of the old FS 4 aircraft I designed for
my own home use back in "the old days" <G>

I don't know. I think it's the best fighting game I've ever played. It tops
out Air Warrior and WarBirds, and leaves 1942 in the dust. I've got a AMD
233/32 megs RAM, 24X CD, Monster 3DI, MS FF stick, the scenery (magnificent
scenery, btw) is on full. I especially like white and blackouts with the sun
and g-forces. The only time I get frame rates less than 15 is when I'm online,
and even then it's usually because someone is joining the fray. Afterward, it
levels back to about 15-17.

Have you seen FLY yet? Could it be another (gasp!) ProPilot? Personally, I'll
believe it is as good as the hype ONLY when I see it.

You gotto watch it now. I'm, a devoted ProPilot fan (despite certain SPP
faults)waiting for a copy of MS Combat sim to hit my area stores. In the
meantime check out some PP99 screen shots at AVSIM. Most realistic 3D cloud
textures to date. The screen shots are done by a regular forum member, not
Sierra.

Go to advanced settings put it to 800 X whatever. Then in the main settings
change it from Best Graphics to Fastest. All that will do is take away sky
texture and water texture. Brings FPS rates up a LOT! I have a pentium 200 4X
CD-ROM 16Mb. mem and it runs great!
Sorry to hear about your unsatisfaction with CFS.

A 233 w/16 meg should be in the Smithsonian already. For playing today's
games..a PII with 64 is the minimum...sorry.
