Hi everyone, bought CFS a few days ago and i love it. No problems with
installation and i'm happy because not an expert when off the beaten path.
I have a P233 48mgs and a Diamond monster 1 , and in 640X480 i get a good
frame rate except for when a whole lot is happening at the same time i.e.
ground strafing with multiple explosions or in a very heavy dogfight. The
scenery is great. I'm still not used to landing in formation though, especially
when your plane is flying like a rock because of damage..will not import new
aircraft for a while, i want to savor the atmosphere for now..
see you all in the skies over Europe..( you better see me first..)

The problem I am having is that every once in a while my aircraft sounds are
severely contanimated in both FS98 and ComSim. It started happening right
after I downloaded the ComSim on my C drive. In order for me to clear this
problem up, I have to shut the computer down and reboot. I must do this every
almost every time I fly. My machine is a 233 IBM aptiva with an ATI 3D Rage
Pro card. I get an average of 23 fps with everything set to normal. My FS98
gives me 45 to 90+ depending on scenery area.

This Sim does have great scenery !!

Any ideas on the sound problems?

Thanks,
David

I've encountered no problem to install and use CFS. So far, I'm quite impressed
by the sim. I've got a PII 300 with 64 M of RAM and an ATI Expert@Work (no 3D
card) and the frame rate is better with all options enabled than under FS98.
This is trully a great sim but I've got some questions :

1/ Can you change your plane and its settings during the flight ? I can't get
any menu but the View Options one when I'm flying.

2/ What about the weather? How do you set the different cloud and wind layers?
The temperature? I wonder if Real weather work with CFS, I'm gonna try it...

3/ It seems you can't get any night flight. Am I wrong?

The visual and the flight models (except the German fighters) are great but the
interface, the options and the overall remind me of Aces over Europe (wich was
boring and had dumb flight models). I hope (and I'm sure)that in the following
weeks or months some talented people among the sim community will improve this
program the way they did with FS98.

Best regards,

SPADS

Q. Can you convert the aircraft that you cannot fly that are currently in
Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim to fly?

Q. Can you convert any aircraft into the same game that you can use the
weapons?

I just tried to play on the zone. For me the planes were a lot smaller than in
the standard CFS. Even at point blank range they look as if miles away. Is that
normal or did I go wrong somewhere?
Oh, by the way, I agree, playing with tweaked plane should be forbidden!

I am running CFS and FS98 on a P200MX, 64meg ram, Matrox G100 agp 8 meg, with a
Monster 3D card. I sometimes get frame rates as high as 35-40 in dense, drops
some in very dense, this is in CFS. (res 800x600). Much lower fr in FS98.
Don't know exactly you should do to improve performance, but believe that it
should perform better than what you have reported.

I had slow frame rates initially and in the course of re-installing I think it
re-installed the DirectX6 drivers more correctly. This gives me framerates in
the same order as my FS98. ALso now have HUDs in CFS on my add-on panels that I
don't have in FS98.

Make sure you have DirectX 6 installed. Also, the experience level you select
for the enemy has a big effect; "rookie" is fastest, and "ace" can be very
slow.

I have lost the RGB numbers for transparent black, does anyone have them

the trick is to "pour" transparent black into the window pixels.

You do not need the converter for fs98 a/c just drag and drop. I believe the

You aren't reading "readme" files! The converter only woks on FS95 or FS5.1
aircraft and not on all of those. FS98 aircraft are copied over direct. The
"readme" file describes how. Bob F.

Hi Darwin !

"i mean really why would the personal homecomputer require a accounting
program"

Micro$oft would answer: because with it you now can play Micro"crap" Combat Sim
of course !
So, according to M$$$, if you want to fully play CF$, you have to buy the game
(let's say 60$) AND Excel (thus MS Office... let's say 7 or 800$) !
By the way... I've not seen on my box that I would need Excel in order to use

You are perfectly right. Anyway, I think I should not have to go to that page
in order to know that I need something else to run this soft.
Imagine you are in your favorite computer shop. You see that CFS, and think
"How great it is" because of graphics, etc... may be you won't think to go to
that download page before buying it !
May be a little stick like "Need MS Excel in order to fully run" would be more
honnest... or at least mentionning that fact on the box.
Even if... you can have that info in MS Internet Site...

Darwin,
Go back a few messages from your original post #1910. May be around #1900 or
so. Someone indicated an alternate program that can be used for missions.
It's free if you want to deal with a very long down load time or you can pay a
very reasonable fee for the CD.
Now quit your whining or we will to send you to your room with no computer
priviledges.
Have a happy and SAFE new year.

Hi,

Look for the the file combatfs.cfg in your CFS directory.

Then open it, look for

[Prefs]
PANEL_MASKING_OFF=0

Make this line look like this and your panels will have transparent window
areas.

Good luck

Cut & Pasted---always a wise idea to look around the site first, but here ya
go..

A lot of people are having major problems bringing in planes from FS98, mainly
concerning the black bands at the bottom of the screens, or not being able to
see out of the cockpit. After a week of searching for answers, and a lot of
trial and error by myself, I thought you might post this for others to see.

Three possibilities where problems may occur in the conversion process:

1. Check the file in the root CFS directory, combatfs.cfg (C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator is where mine is) There is an
entry there called 'panel_masking='. See that it is set to '0'.

2. Your imported plane has a pixel other that the color black in the 0,0
position (first pixel in far upper left hand corner) of the bitmap picture for
the panel. This pixel must be black (true black where red=0, green=0, blue=0),
as the CFS program checks this pixel to see what color is to be transparent. If
you think this might be the problem, and it is a lot of the time, fire up your
paint program (I use Paint Shop Pro, you can find it on the web as a trial
version), open up the bitmap file in the panel folder of the plane you are
trying to fix (i.e., c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight
Simulator\Aircraft\P51d\panel\Panel_Background_640.bmp) zoom way up, and check
the color of the first pixel. Just 'cause it looks dark don't mean it's black;
you need to be using a program that will properly identify the 'true' color,
reporting r,g, and b values. All must be zero. If it ain't, your program should
let you choose a tiny, tiny brush, chose the 'true black' color, and paint that
sucker black. Trust me, that one tiny pixel makes all the difference. Save it.
That'll fix that, if it was a problem. Check all of the bitmaps in the panel
folder, there may be others that have a problem.

3. Lastly, the panel.cfg file may need tweaking. Here's the deal:
Again, open up the panel subfolder in the folder of the plane you are trying to
fix. Open up the panel.cfg file using Notepad (Hint: Let Notepad become the
default for .cfg files. Saves a lot of fussing). You will see all the used
windows defined first, under [Window Titles], and then 'window00=p51.bmp' or
some such, and below that, all of the windows are mapped out. You'll find a
paragraph something like this:

[Window00]
file=miljet1.bmp
size_mm=1000
window_size_ratio=1.0
position=7
visible=1
ident=0

This relates to the Cockpit Panel Window. What you'll need to do is to add the
lines CFS wants to see, and remove the 'window_size_ratio=1.0', so that it
reads like this:

[Window00]
file=miljet1.bmp
position=7
size_mm=1000
window_pos=0.0,0.0
window_size=1.000,1.000
render_3d_window=1
pixel_size=0,0
sizeable=1
visible=1
ident=MAIN_PANEL

Add the necessary lines to all of the defined windows in the file.

The panels should now work without the black windows. However, if there were
operating buttons and switches on the original panels, the line
'render_3d_window=1' killed it. If this bothers you, change the entry to '0'.
In addition the lines 'window_size=1.000,1.000' may blow up some windows too
large, usually the extra panels [window01] or [window02] or whatever else there
is besides the main panel. Same goes for the 'window_pos=0.0,0.0'. Some windows
are not meant to be placed here (top left). Lastly, the 'window_size_ratio='
may be necessary for some smaller supplimentary windows to be displayed
properly. If you suspect a particular line may be causing more problems, remark
it out, like this:

//window_pos=0.0,0.0

At the bottom of the Panel cfg under [Default View] you'll see these two
lines:
SIZE_X=8191
SIZE_Y=5000

The numbers identify where the Combat Flight Sim Gunsight (and therefore the
scenery horizon) lines-up on screen. If your gunsight is too high, or if you
can see that the window is not stretched down all the way in any of the views
from the cockpit (check 'em all) then you need to increase the Y numbers. If it
is too low, then you need to decrease the Y numbers. The above numbers seem to
place it dead center, but that may still leave black bands at the bottom of
some views. The value "SIZE_Y=6150' stretches the window all the way down to
the bottom of the screen and will fix any black bands that may exist in the
alternate views from the cockpit (L,R, and rear). You cannot get the gunsight
centered with every imported plane, as these planes were not designed
specifically for CFS. Remember, FS98 has no guns. Planes designed for CFS are
done from the ground up with the gunsight in mind (panels and *.mdl files). So
you end up compromising with imported planes. If you set 'render_3d_window=0',
then you can fly the plane using all the cool controls with the mouse (if there
are any), and 'drag' the panel down just like any other window to expose the
gunsight and do your dogfighting. If all this don't fix it, you have a problem
I ain't seen yet.

If they are FS5.1 or FS95 aircraft, they need to be run through the CFS
converter (CFSCONV.EXE) that is in the main folder of CFS. If they have been
modified from the features of FSFS they will not convert. Find another.
If they are FS98, they need no conversion. They should be copied over to the
CFS Aircraft folder with the same folder contents that they have in FS98.

It's a big world out there, maybe he didn't want you to understand. Maybe it
was for other eyes. Maybe it's top secret! Whatever, but I do not think I saw a
rule for english only, I may be wrong. I do want Americans to keep the image of
demanding everybody speak our language. It is sad that europeans learn english
as well as their own. It just makes us look lazy and bad.

Hello out there,

has anyone bought or had the chance to test Data Beckers 'STUKA Dive-Bomber'
yet?
I don't need more stukas because I already bought The Associates 'Combat Pilot
No.1' with 2 excellent Stukas, but I am keen to know about the included Berlin
Scenery of 1944.
Is it just another add-on with 10 more buildings, or is it worth buying because
of really good scenery?
What I mean is a scenery like Stefan Breuer's Berlin Tempelhof
scenery(thfedd12.zip) what is amongst the best I've ever seen.

Thanks for replies

Boys don't forget that this great game was released in German,U.K., and U.S..
Thus it would not be suprising to find foreign fans here as well. If the poor
fellow is unable to write in english does not mean that he might not get an
answer to his quest. We all had problems to deal with and had lot of good
folks like your selfs to take the time to answer others questions, thanks.
Thus am sure that he will find a good soul that is fluent in his language.
So before you fire out your tung, don't forget that one of your favorite
craft that you imported from this mecca site, just might have been done by
a laborious designer some where on this planet that we know as EARTH. Planes
are not only vehicle to war , but to a greater peace, making this Earth
too small to sustain abuse. Keep on flying and learning the misteries of
life, flying might be one of them.

When I try to fly a converted plane in CFS, the panel appears but the scenery
turns black. Sounds, gauges and the plane itself work correct!Note that the
converted plane and the panel (AV 8b-panel, Phil Perott's) were downloaded
separately and joined together afterwards.I don't experience this problem when
I use the standard FS 98 planes.

If you have noticed, there are slight pauses in CFS about every 30 seconds.
They are easily overlooked because they last for under a second. I suspect
that the pauses are a result of the program going into a cash (or RAM) and
retrieving more information. I doubt that it can be stopped . However , I
think it can be controlled somewhat. If there is a config file someplace that
says "go to ram and get X amount of info whenever it is needed", then we can
increase the amount of info specified by X by 2X or so and it should decrease
the amount of pauses by ½. That is if one has the necessary amount of ram.
Other programs, such as Netscape has that option. I have no idea if any of this
is true, but if it is, I suspect someone knows how to do it. I seem to recall
Glendavy talking about this a little but I can't find it.......maxwood......

I take it this is needed for missions your writing yourself?...

I know of one way of doing it, but you'll need to download some stuff 1st.
Keith Bedford wrote a mission editor (windows based, real easy to use and
great!) which includes a list of all object types for use in the missions.
Certain vehicles (can't remember which at the moment) can be used for your
purposes (as I found to my cost!). Don't know about making buildings fire at
you though.

The mission editor is available at http://members.xoom.com/KeithBedford/
I've written a tutorial for ver 0.85 which will help you get up to speed with
it, if you want - mail me at andy@athomeinengland.freeserve.co.uk if you want
it.

OR...
Another method would be to get one of the listing of CFS object types (lots of
sites have them eg http://www.cfsops.com/ has a full listing on it somewhere).
Then select the vehicles with relatively low object type #'s in whatever
mission editor your using.

good luck,
andy.

I have downloaded and installed many aircraft/scenery/mission add-ons for CFS
and I am having a problem. Whenever I start a mission (whether an add-on or
not), CFS crashes while the mission loads. I haven't changed anything about the
default aircraft, so I have no idea what's going on. Does anyone know of any
possible reasons for this?

Aircraft Factory 99 by Abacus was designed for this purpose.
Also search Flight sim or other good FS/CFS site for more Utilities.
There are several each for Flight mods, Damage profiles, texture change
etc. One of them should be right for you. (Note: AF99 is a retail package,
but the Utils are usually freeware.)

FlightSim 2000 does not support weapons. Not sure about importing CFS aircraft
into FS2000 to fly, but I believe that is possible. Also, you can import FS98
scenery into CFS, however, not sure about FS2000 scenery. I believe there is a
problem there, but someone else may know better.

have loaded 1942 PAW Gold (as well as the basic version for that matter) and
have found that all bombs and torpedoes basically float along with the plane
maintaining similar speed to the plane. They do fall but verrrrry slowwwwwly.

Microprose cannot give me any guidance. Has any one else had this problem and

I recently bought a game called "RAF Collection" consisting of 30 British

Would it be possible for these planes to be flown in Combat Flight Simulator???

If so, could the military planes in this collection be made to fire their

Scenery Trouble/Adding Aircraft

I recently bought Combat Flight Simulator I. When I tried to add FS-98 scenery
it crashed. Every time. In the end I had to reinstall the program.

With FS-98 I have installed dozens of downloaded sceneries. And had no problems
whatsoever. According to the manual adding scenery should work just like with
FS-98. What do I do wrong?

- - -

I have downloaded several additional aircraft for CFS I. Flying them is no
problem. But now I'd like to fly against them. How do I do that?
Once again the manual is of no help. I did everything the way they described
it. And ended up with a non-working simulator.

I have had CFS from the start. I have downloaded quit a bit of scenery,
aircraft, missions…etc. I have modified panels, gimped with gauges, config
files, air files, and what not. I have CFS 2 but I have not flown it very much.
I upgraded my computer from 500 mghz to 1.25 gighx and I have not loaded CFS 2
because there is still a lot that I want to do with CFS. I can now turn
everything on to the max without concern for Frame Rates. This makes me like
CFS even more. There are a couple of things that I would like to do with CFS.
I have close to 400 zip files for CFS .The names on some of the zip files give
no clue as to what they are about. I want to organize these files and change
the zip file name to some sort of organized system. (No big deal). Once I get
all of my files the way I want them, I will remove CFS completely and start
from SCRATCH. Unzipping each scenery and installing it correctly and have some
sort of record as to just what scenery is loaded into CFS. Over the years as I
was trying to figure out how every thing works I am sure I have made many errs
in loading scenery and stuff so I figure that the only way to have clean
scenery files is to start over. This leads me to my question.
When one reads the instructions on some zip files, it says to install some
files to the CFS main scenery folder. Shouldn’t those files go into the
“scenery\all “ folder? I think that it works either way but I am not sure about
that. If not then why would CFS have a “scenery\all” folder?

I can't vouch for how much better XP is over 2K for games that will run on
either of the two. However, as far as straight compatibility goes, I have CFS 1
& 2, FS2K and the demo for Sturmovik and have not had compatibility problems.
I also have Falcon 4 (with SP3) and Jane's WW2Fighters and F/A-18 and they also
run okay - except that for F-18, I had to download the patch. I'd be surprised
if you had compatibility problems with latter versions of FS or CFS (I'd be
nearly as surprised if MS - never missing a chance to extort buyers to move up
to newer OS's - didn't require XP for FS-2004 and CFS3.)

Unclear what you mean by going through the ranks. There is a free flight mode
in which you can, is essence, test fly the various aircraft. This includes the
stock aircraft and any aircraft you add to the sim.

Just tried it again after posting the above and guess what? I had
forgotten to remove these lines from the Combatfs.cfg file [SOUND]
Channels=1
SamplesPerSec=11025

I then removed them and tried it again with Sidewinder 3.02 software
upgrade and the joystick is not reconized. So I put the above lines back
in the cfg and it works again. So to anyone who has this problem with
FS98 or CombatFS try the above lines in the Cfg file.

I have tried flying the career missions on both sides and flying the 109 can be
frustrating but a good test of skill. I have found that although the spits can
out corner you, if you lower your flaps and apply full rudder then you can cut
them off. I can't see how Hartmann got 352 kills in something as unresponsive
as the 109 Gustav that is in the game. The 190 isn't as easy as even the
handbook states. It stalls too easy for me. It seems rather similar to the P-51
air file in this respect. I can't attest to the reality factor as I'm not a
real pilot.
Why not include a P-38 and the Me-262? They did most of the work on them.
Maybe they ran out of time with deadlines and will have add-on packages. Maybe
the 262s fly later in the careers that I haven't gotten to as yet. I don't
know.
I suspect that from the nature of the CFS packaging you'd see a Pacific Theatre
version or add-on soon Seems to be a big hit in Japan) and maybe later
something in a jet situation.

Although it is true that knowledge of aircraft performance and flying skill is
essential to bring out the best in an aircraft, I just think there's something
wrong with the way CFS handles the AI pilots piloting both the default and
converted planes. I've experienced fighting against Burnage's "Super D-9 Dora"
(this is the B. Drehfal model right?) and it was WAY too fast and maneuverable
for a D9. I also had this experience with the now-famous converted L'Homme
Corsair (the third iteration). I flew it stock, and I realized the reason I
kept on stalling is that I didn't modify the *.DP and set weapons weight to
zero. You have to do this, so that L'Homme's Corsair flies like it was designed
to, otherwise it would take the weight of the armament (4 *.50 cal brownings)
plus its ammo. That's a pretty hefty addition! Thus, the Corsair would stall.
Knowing this, I tried to QuickCombat against this stock Corsair, thinking the
AI pilot would run into problems flying it (way too heavy because of the guns).
But boy, did it turn and burn like an F-16! Also, all the animated parts in the
AI-piloted Corsairs (flaps, gear etc), seem to be in "down" position, and the
prop wasn't spinning! There really is something wrong, and I wish somebody
could address this problem ASAP.

Err, does this mean we expect pretty much the same seemingly "ho-hum" feel with
the up and coming "Battle for Midway" package? I dunno, but that Japanese
carrier (Akagi?) looks really good to land on...but then again, you may be
right--it may be good to land on, but the question is, did they (the add-on
designers) make a good re-creation of the Pacific theater?

Another point I wan't to discuss regarding WWII pacific theater operations is
that, since it was primarily a "carrier wars" thing, the air-launched torpedo
played a very decisive role. Since Kates and Avengers will be present, I wonder
how the designers would simulate the release, underwater travel, and impact of
torpedoes? Bottom line...if there is still no way to simulate torpedoes in CFS,
then add-on designers should stop publishing Pacific Theater type add-ons.

I remember "Aces of the Pacific" by Dyanmix and how well it dealt with this
torpedo thing "...there I was in my Avenger. It shook constantly as bursts of
flak mushroom on both my port starboard side...BOOM! An explosion up front!
Whew, that was close; Uh, oh, engine vibrating badly--I think I got some
shrapnel in my engine! Oil pressure dropping, but no matter, I'm nearing my
objective...130 ft, airspeed below 100 kts, now is the time to release! pLUNK!
The torpedo safely dives beneath the waves, and as I execute a slow bank to the
right, I watch through my left windows as it silently makes it way to my prize
target...the YAMATO!

If add-on designers can recreate THAT feel, I salute them!

Yeah I can help. I have it...but I think it's for FSFW95. I'll try to convert

it's a Globemaster taking off in EF2000 v2.0. Have you seen the intro video for

"I find it sad that some people want to try to hang one label on all the people
who go to or use CFC (combatfs.com). Let me guess. Since I'm from Alabama that
must make me a uneducated, tobacco chewing, NASCAR loving redneck."
Being from the UK I don't really get to meet many folks from Alabama, so
haven't really got a clue how I'd generalise their characteristics.
But I am now aware of at least one of them that might benefit from a course in
basic English Language, since this would invariably improve his ability to read
AND comprehend a given text.

so Tal, again, if you think I was having a go at you, all I can say is re-read
what I actually wrote. The only thing I can truthfully say about you as an
idividual, Tal, is that you have chosen a cool handle/nickname, which I
personnaly like. But, in case you miss read this reply as you did my last one,
please remember my your more than welcome to come and discuss it in person, the
only thing you can achieve by making 'witty' comments is to show how bad your
basic comprehension skills are.
Andy.

ps. if you really want to take this further, leave an e-mail address, and lets
take this off the forum. The folks at Flightsim.Com have gone to a lot of
trouble and effort to give us all a place to gain a better knowledge of CFS, so
lets not take up their time and energy by having slanging matches in the forum,
eh.

I find it quite effective to creep up from behind, as you get time to give a
