Any suggestions as to how I can make a steady, controlled descent and landing?
( If I can get the RPM problem resolved then the “lining up” problem should be
a matter of practice).

Well, it's all practice especially with the toys you have. One of the things
you're going to have to focus on is tweaking the joystick settings in FS98
until you get reliable, repeatable results. That means lot's of touch and
go's and other pattern work. I've heard others comment on FS98's tendancy
not to recall certain settings when needed, but not lately. Me? I'm the
opposite stick. In over eighteen years of flight and racing sims, I've
never used any besides the keyboard. Wether I'm doing a CAT III approach to
PANC in a B-777 (FS98) or catching a two-wire in F14 Fleet Defender Gold -
watching Dale Earnhart pass me on the final lap of the Charlotte 300
(Nascar Racing 2) or chasing the pack around Donington for the BTCC
championship (TOCA). I find the keyboard to be an excellent device, and
nothing needs recalibrating.

I have become accustomed to using the keyboard with train-sim. With flight-sim
I used both. Ergo, I am going to take your advice and turn off the joystick and
go with just the keyboard.
BTW, I did get pretty adept at landing using auto pilot up until the last few
seconds then taking over manual.
Thanks for the advice. Gotta' study all of those key controls and keep in mind
I am flying a plane, not driving s train.

I use the mouse on the instruments, and use my hand on the keypad for
flight controls and view changes. Once reason I haven't updated to the
latest and greatest FSNavigator was some changes the author made to the
key assignments changes the layout of the view keys.

A lot of people won't even admit that you can use the keys with any
sense of finesse. I actually had someone accuse me of not being a
'serious' flight simmer because I didn't have a yoke and couldn't get
the 'proper' feel of the aircraft. (I wonder what kind of seat he
gets the proper feel from?)

I'm amazed Christopher! I believe you're the only person I've ever seen on this
forum that admits to using a keyboard! I thought I was the only one doing that,
and I've been trying to keep it under wraps. Maybe we should now start coming
out of the closet. I don't even have a joystick, yoke, or whatever. (I do have
a mouse.)

I posted the first message in this thread and I am a little red-faced. At the
time I had been away from flight-sim for a long time. I took off in the Cessna
without re-familiarizing myself. After I posted the problem I discovered I was
flying it with the prop set on manual adjustment and I was flying it with the
pitch set at whatever and never changing it.
I changed the setting to "automatic" and I recalibrated the thottle slide on my
joystick and although it is not perfect it is a vast improvement.
I tried the keyboard method of flying but since getting improved response on my
joystick I have reverted to the joystick.
Thanks for all of your input.
