Has anyone experienced a problem with their landing gear going down and the
spoilers being activated while in flight? If so, how did you fix the problem?
Also, while flying online in a multiplayer game, I can be flying level at
30,000 feet and the simulator tells me that I crashed into a building or into
another plane that isn't any where near my location... has anyone experienced
this? Thanks for the help.

To answer your first question....no. To answer your second question.....yes.
There are spots in FS98 that you will get a "building crash"or "plane
crash"with nadda around and clear air showin. This is not your fault,but the
sims. Is there a cure? No and yes. No there is no patch or anything that
corrects any of these as I know of and yes by just not flyin that particular
route.

Is there a file that will allow other aircraft to be flying around or ground
traffic at airports? Not multi-player though.

Hi Dan!

Yes - it's called FS2002.....only kidding, could not resist the temptation!!!

Seriously - look for FSTraffic. Not sure if this is still available on this
site but you can always try here (http://www.fstraffic.com)

I got this from the ReadMe text from the FSTraffic file; FSTraffic
~~~~~~~~~
Installation
Unzip eghd_.stx to the LTA import directory of your Flight Simulator. Start
FS98, activate FSTraffic and select 'import'.
Can anyone tell me what the LTA import directory of my Flight Simulator
is...and where it may be located?
Thanks.
When you install FSTraffic, an LTA folder is automatically created in your
FS2000 folder. This then has various sub folders within it, one of which is
"Import".
The tracks that can be downloaded (with the extension.stx etc.) will only work
with FSTraffic (a commercial programme)
here is a link to help you out ....
http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?8MJ91009=main/fs98faq/aircraft.htm#2.3
If the link doesn't work, go to the FAQ Fs98 section on the MAIN MENU, then
look under the AIRCRAFT section.
when you unzip the aircraft file, you will usually see 4 sub-diriectories
named- texture, model, panel, and sound and you'll probably also see a readme
files, a file with a .air extension and a text file named- fileid.diz. Well
keep this screen up, and go into your FS98 aircraft directory and create a
folder name for the plane (name it what you wish) then go to the unzipped file
and highlight its contents and drag them into that folder (that you created).
And you done baby!
P.S.- Of course- you absolutley must have the FS98 aircraft/adventure convertor
(get it from flightsim.com) installed for ANY plane to work.
P.P.S.- 9 times out of 10 your plane will not have a panel and/or sounds with
it, you must download these seperatley. For panel installation-
1. download the panel
2. access the panel directory of the aircraft you wish to use it on
3. place all files with a .bmp extension (including the file named panel.cfg)
into your panel subfolder of your aircraft
4. place all files with a .gau files in your FS98 guages folder
for sounds-
1. download the sound package
2. access the sound directory of the aircraft you wish to use it on
3. place EVERY file in your zip, into the sound folder
And you is all done.
oh well, forget about my previous message, I just got out of the archives, and
I DO NOT want to start that again. it seems messages about the nodes sign have
'the snowball rolling downhill' effect.
well I have a question, and no it's not about American Airlines planes being
uploaded :-).
Well here it is- Can anyone tell me (or give me a link to a site) what planes
(in roster/lineup form) the following airlines fly (perhaps with sub-airlines
where they apply, i.e.- Delta Connection, United Express, American Eagle,
etc.)-
American, United, Continental, British Airways, Delta, US Airways, QANTAS,
Aeroflot, UPS, Fedex, and Air France.
I have searched and searched and searched the search engines of Google, Hotbot,
Yahoo, Lycos, etc. And typed in many a line and still have no solid results.
(I've also searched American Airlines, and Delta Airlines offical sites).
I've pretty much got it (in terms of the Boeing 7_7 series) for the following
airlines-
United
American
Delta
However I've just recently begun downloading European, Asian, and Oceanic
airlines, so I don't know much about them in terms of what they fly.
Oh, with United, and American airlines- I mainly need info on what airbuses,
and small planes (MD-88 size) they fly.
thanx a mill.
Hi,
As an Aussie, I can tell you the Qantas use 737-300, -400, and just recently.
-800 (with winglets), 767-200 and -300, all on domestic services (within
Australia). On International services, the workhorse is the 747-400, but a
number of -300 series are still used, principally on services to the Far East.
Qantas has been implementing a program to sell its remaining 747-200s, and has
sold its 747SPs. They also use the 767-300 on services to the Far East, and the
737s on services to New Zealand, (which is closer to Sydney than Perth).
Qantas has ordered the Airbus A330-200, and deliveries are expected to start
later this year. The A380 is also on order, but I'm not sure when that will be
operational.
I hope all the above is of some use to ypu.
Regards,
Peter.
Hi All!
After a long hiatus from flightsim, I'm back with tweaking FS98 and having a
ball. One little utility that I can't find anymore at flightsim.com is
something that eliminates those annoying 'flashing' ground lights in FS98.
Seems to me it was a simple fix that I used to be able to download. If you
find it, feel free to email me at:
bperkins@attbi.com
Also, my ICQ is: 139971533 (set to automatic)
Thanks!
Welcome to the forum Rowley,
Well,this is gonna take a bit to explain and I'll try to keep it
understandable and simple...so stick on my heels and follow along.
1.) You should already have WinZip installed on the ol' puter. If you
don't,toddle over to the "Must Have Files" section and download it and install
it.(Don't panic,it does it all by itself)
2.) Using Winzip unzip the scenery package to the default unzipped file that
Winzip creates when it installs itself.
3.) Using Windoze Explorer,which will show a divided screen when you open
it,you will want to click the Program file on the left side of the screen which
will show the contents on the right. A double click on the same folder will
expand and show it on the left side of the screen. Scroll down till you see the
Microsoft games folder and double click on it on the left side of the screen
and voila,Microsoft Flight Simulator appears. Double click on it and all the
sub-folders appear on both the left and the right side of the screen.
You want to double click on the scenery folder of FS and expand it on the
left side of the screen so you see all the sub-folders on both sides of the
screen.
4.) Scroll down on the left side of the screen till you se the folder named
"unzipped". This is the default unzipped folder created by Winzip. Double click
on it and you will see the unzipped scenery folder inside it.
Go ahead and click on it and see if there are any zip folders inside it and if
there are you will need to unzip them.
5.) Create a new folder in the scenery folder of FS and name it as the scenry
you have downloaded. Inside that folder you will create two files. Name one
scenery and one texture.
6.) Now double click on it and expand it on the left side of the screen so you
see both sub folders under it. Scroll down and look for the scenery and texture
folders of the scenery you downloaded in the unzipped file. The
texture(r8,oav,av,) files go in the texture sub folder you created in the
scenery folder in FS. The bgl files go in the scenery sub folder of the
scernery you created in FS.
7.) After you have that all done close windows explorer and start FS.
After you have FS up and running if you click on the menu bar at the top
under the world section you will see scenery library. Click on it.
It will ask you a question about if you understand what you are doing and you
answer yes. Click on files and click on add scenery and make sure the scenry
active box is on. Do an auto seach and then scroll through all the scenerys by
click the next path button until you come up on the one you just put in there.
When you find it click on add all files. If it tells you that they are already
added just click okay. Now click the closed button and you will see an edit tab
along with some other tabs. Click on it and type in the name of the scenery and
it will default it as the first layer,leave it there. Click okay and answer yes
all the way out and you should have it.
Thank goodness Mutt handled that first!{G} He's got the info you need and the
only thing I could add is to keep the big scenery sets outside of the main FS
directory. I keep all add-on scenery in the 'Microsft Games' folder in case I
have to re-install FS. Its also easier to link the scenery sets because they
are easier to find. Your only other alternative would be to drop the BGL files
into FS's main folder for the default Austrailia scenery while dropping the
texture files into the same folders 'texture' folder. This is the quick way to
do it because the scenery will automatically update when you start FS {not sure
if you'll get the airports in the 'World' pull-down} but I'd only do this if
you spend most of your time flying around western Oz.
For the US airlines, do a search for "aeromoe." It should turn up a sight with
fleet lists for all US airlines listing every plane ever used going back to the
DC-3's. There are a few similar sights, some that list non-US airlines. Try
searching for "airline fleet lists."
Also try going to aerotransport.free.fr
I've flown them too, using FSNavigator to fly the planes. Some of the
adventures have programming that's a little too intolerant. I recommend
flying all of them and just having fun. Even if one breaks down, you
can always shut the adventure off and fly from wherever you ended up. :-)
A real 747 cruises at about 35000 feet in excess of 500mph. Why do none of my
sort of altitude? The Barber pole is always low and I am always told that I'm
Hi Tim
If you check your NAV gauges you will see that you actually are going at around
500 knots over the ground. The airspeed gauge measures what is called
indicated airspeed which is a measure of the dynamic pressure caused by the
motion of the aircraft relative to the still air pressure. As you climb into
thinner air, this pressure difference decreases, and your indicated airspeed
drops farther and farther below your true speed through the air (true
airspeed). The airspeed gauge gives indicated airspeed as this is the best
measure of how the aircraft will behave.
The aircraft can not actually fly at an indicated airspeed of 500 knots as the
dynamic pressure would tear the plane apart. So it can only fly at a true
airspeed of 500 knots at high altitude, in the thinner air, where indicated
airspeed is lower.
I hope that this helps. There are a lot of good web sites which explain this
in more detail (perhaps here at flightsim.com).
Happy flying.
There is only a handful of aircraft both fantasy and real that will give you
a 500KIAS reading at altitude. A few of those are;
1.) Any of the SR-71's
2.) Lady Hawk : 507KIAS @ FL600
3.) 21st Century XB-70 Valkyrie: 570+KIAS @ FL600++++
4.) Super Sonic 747-700 : 900+KIAS @ FL400
There are more but these would be some of the heavy hitters
Thanks a lot....sorry for being so stupid!
Hi Tim
If you check your NAV gauges you will see that you actually are going at around
500 knots over the ground. The airspeed gauge measures what is called
indicated airspeed which is a measure of the dynamic pressure caused by the
motion of the aircraft relative to the still air pressure. As you climb into
thinner air, this pressure difference decreases, and your indicated airspeed
drops farther and farther below your true speed through the air (true
airspeed). The airspeed gauge gives indicated airspeed as this is the best
measure of how the aircraft will behave.
The aircraft can not actually fly at an indicated airspeed of 500 knots as the
dynamic pressure would tear the plane apart. So it can only fly at a true
airspeed of 500 knots at high altitude, in the thinner air, where indicated
airspeed is lower.
I hope that this helps. There are a lot of good web sites which explain this
in more detail (perhaps here at flightsim.com).
Happy flying.
J.Magwood
A real 747 cruises at about 35000 feet in excess of 500mph. Why do none of my
planes (amongst which are several 747's) fly anything like that fast at that
sort of altitude? The Barber pole is always low and I am always told that I'm
overspeed. What's going on?
There is only a handful of aircraft both fantasy and real that will give you
a 500KIAS reading at altitude. A few of those are;
1.) Any of the SR-71's
2.) Lady Hawk : 507KIAS @ FL600
3.) 21st Century XB-70 Valkyrie: 570+KIAS @ FL600++++
4.) Super Sonic 747-700 : 900+KIAS @ FL400
There are more but these would be some of the heavy hitters
Sorry, Harry. The answer is No! FS is not backward compatible. You can use
FS98 on FS2K and FS2K2, but not the other way around.
I posted a message a while ago (see 118719) but I don't seem to be able to get
an answer ... I honestly thought it was a rather basic question ;-) Anyway any
hints which forum/place I can next try my luck?
Thanks,
Can anyone tell me if there is someway to stop FS98 aircraft from veering away
from the runway during night landings? With aircraft setup perfectly on final,
the airplane will do everything but set down on the centerline, sometimes it
will not set down on the runway at all.
Carl, FS98 does not install with a code number. It is a self installing
program that should start on its own once you put the cdrom in the drive. If
you do not have autostart enabled all you have to do is go to START/RUN and
type in the drive letter that you have the cd in.
I can't seem to display FS98 3D effects properly on my 3D video card, a
Creative 3DBlaster Riva TNT2 Vanta.
The 3D card is a PCI model, has 32 MB of VRAM and is based on the NVidia Vanta
chip.
My OS is Windows 98 SE, my CPU is a P233 MMX and my system RAM amounts to 128
MB (yes, I know it's all pretty outdated but it should be about enough to run
FS98 right?)
My problem is that the 3D special effects are disappointing in look or lacking
altogether, although the 3D full screen video mode seems to be roughly working.
The main problems are that the clouds are "blocky" like they were made up of
cubes and that the fog is represented by a grey streak all along the horizon
line.
In the program options, I have selected the "primary video adapter (3d)" as my
adapter and 1024x768x16 as my resolution. All the graphic enhancements have
been enabled in the options; generally speaking I have selected the top
quality/slow framerate settings.
Is this a known problem with the NVidia Vanta chip, or am I missing something
in the configuration? I have read the FS98 review on this site and my
screenshots look nothing like the ones in there.
Please help me ;)
Sorry, but it can't be done. The FS9 and FS2k2 are not backward compatible.
You can move FS98 aircraft up to FS2000, etc..
Some third-party aircraft don't have landing lights, especially older ones
converted from FS5.x or FSFW95. Download a file called lladd97.zip, which can
add landing lights to many aircraft. This is a DOS program, but there are
Windows "front ends" for it; try lladd98.zip or llfe10.zip.
As far as tail logo lighting, that involves a repaint.
These files you can download in the "Must Have Files"-section here
1) Correct class in the correct livery, if available
2) Correct class in available livery, if chosen carrier isn't available
3) If class type isn't available, no track
4) If the runway ILS is too far out of alignment, no track
This is outlined in the manual but I think I've remembered right ! Basically,
unless I'm mistaken, the default tracks will only fly the larger jets and only
the default FS98 ILS tracks, so if you've replaced one with a 3rd party airport
these default tracks can land in the most perculiar places !
I guess a simple work-round would be to classify your GA planes as Medium or
Large Liner, but then these would also follow the tracks for the large airports
as well.
Cheers,
Alastair
Joseph,
Version 6.4 is in the library. Eric is also the author of Wilco Publishing
767 Pilot In Command, which was for FS2000 (and upgraded for FS2002 - will not
work on FS 2004) It is still a fantastic 767 panel.
References to 7.0 seem to lead to a Eric Ernst web page over on Avsim, and
that page is no longer active. It looks like he closed the site when 767 PIC
came out.
Cheers,
compatible with modern Radeon cards. I tried, for instance, to get FS5 to run
with my GeForce, but it never worked out. I just don't want the same to happen
with FS98 and Radeon.
