I just got upgraded to FS5 from Fs4 and am trying to make the
change-over in my system. I leached a bunch of Scenery and Aircraft
files from the library here. The Scenery files seem to load and run
just fine, but I can't seem to figure out where the aircraft files are
supposed to go. Do I need any additional software for the stock FS5
to recognize new Aircraft? Also, are the NAV radios and ILS the same
frequencies as FS4? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Hello, Doug,
You don't mention which FS5. I assume FS5.1 (otherwise read below).
Most of the add-on planes were built with Flight Simulator Flight Shop
(the FS5.1 analog of A&SD). You need FSFS to use them with FS5.1.
There are some "non-FSFS" planes available. They need only FS5.1.
If your upgrade is to FS5.0, you need another jump to the (free)
"a" upgrade, even to use FSFS planes with FSFS, and, I believe, to use
the non-FSFS planes as well.
FSFS is commmercial software, ~$50 from advertisers here or in many
computer stores. The "a" upgrade used to be available at the Microsoft
website. It might be here too.
I believe Navigational info is taken from real data, and hence it
should carry over from FS4. I still use my FS4 charts for the U.K.,
for instance.
Hope this info helps. -- Dennis S, FSEngEd@AOL.COM

Once you have the right combination of software, the aircraft files
get placed as follows: With FSFS planes, the .air file goes into
fltsim5\pilots, the .?af go to fltsim5\texture. With non-FSFS planes,
I recall the .air file goes into fltsim5\sim (the one with the default
aircraft .air files) and .?af files still go into fltsim5\texture.
I believe Navigational info is taken from real data, and hence it

Hi Dennis,
Just a note to let you know I switched to FS98 last week. I got a 17 inch
monitor and it made all the difference. I can read the panels now. And
I must say I like the change, but I still have FS5.1 on my other drive.
FS98 has great scenery and textures for VFR flight, but I still prefer
FS5.1 TechnicDirect panels for flying the heavies.

Hi Dennis;
Thanks for the assist. Yes, the software is 5.1, and I was afraid there might
be an AS&D counterpart to go with the new program. I'll look for a copy and
then also try to locate some aircraft that I can use now.
Tailwinds and fair weather!
