I have no inside info on this, but I'll share my own FS5.1 CD experience.
I have FS5.1 CD installed with the "minimize time" option, i.e., not
"minimize memory." Generally, though, I run the sim with the CD NOT IN.
I have scads of add-on scenery, including MS NYC, Paris, Caribbean,
Japan, and tons of 3rd-party add-ons.
All I seem to miss running without the CD in place are the default
runways appearing late in the Airport Menu, the ones arranged North America,
Europe, etc., and also the occasional Easter Egg. For instance, I recall
if I use the Airport menu and go to Moscow, there's no airport, only
default turf scenery and, in particular, no Red Square Easter Egg.
Hence, I tend to run without the sim the CD unless I specifically want
one of its special airports or features. And with scads of add-on
scenery from talented designers, that isn't often.
I believe I have that Alaska. It runs fine without the CD and looks
very good. If there are things missing (and on the CD) they certainly
don't affect performance or overall appeal.
Hope this info helps. -- Dennis S, FSEngEd@AOL.COM

enged:

Thanks for the help but I have a couple more questions. What I got from
your reply was that the installation for both the disk and CD version are the
same, except for if you have the CD version and insert the CD, you get a bunch
more scenery. I don't have a Moscow airport on my airports list. Did you
install special scenery for Moscow?

Also, do you know about my joystick question in the message above the CD
post? (it's number 131 or something)
