In response to the queries on running FS5.1 in WIN95 here is a way to
make it run as if it were in DOS. This system runs very well for me and I
get framerates ranging from 9 to 17 on a P166.
1. Create a shortcut for FS5.1
2. Right-click on the shortcut and click on PROPERTIES
3. On the PROPERTIES menu click on the PROGRAM tab
4. Make sure the 'Close on exit' box is checked
5. Click on ADVANCED
6. Check the 'MS-DOS mode' box
7. Click on 'Specify a new MS-DOS configuration'
8. In the 'CONFIG.SYS for MS-DOS mode' text box enter the the config.sys
you used in your old DOS and WIN3.1
9. In the 'AUTOEXEC.BAT for MS-DOS mode' text box enter the autoexec.bat
you used in your old DOS and WIN3.1
The Config.sys I use is as follows (for 32 megs of RAM)
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\E,,386.EXE 8192 RAM (you must specify the amount of
extended memory you want for
FS5.1. I use 8 megs)
DOS=HIGH,UMB
LASTDRIVE=Z
BUFFERS=40,0 (Depending on the amount of RAM you have)
FILES=80 (Depending on the amount of RAM you have)
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\MPUSE.SYS /Y (I prefer mouse.sys to mouse.com)
DEVICEHIGH= (Enter the command line for your sound card)
DEVICEHIGH= (Enter the command line for your CD-ROM. I leave this out
since I copied the boosters from the CD-ROM to my hard
drive and don't need the CD to run from anymore)
The Autoexec.bat I use is as follows:
SET winbootdir=C:/WINDOWS (This command will already be there. It sends
the system back to WIN95 when you exit FS5.1)
SET PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;D:\FLTSIM5
LH C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 12224 (I use 12 megs of RAM for smartdrive)
Add any lines you need for your sound card and cd-rom.
Now, when you click on the FS5.1 icon, the system will automatically exit
from WIN95, reboot in DOS, and start your flight simulator. When you exit
the flight simulator the system will reboot into WIN95.
Hope this helps some of you out.
