So, my question is: how am I supposed to
move the part axis to the top of the gear assembly while keeping the gear in
its present location? Am I just overlooking something? Please help.

You can either hold down the 'shift' key while dragging the axis, or use
the 'Transform/Translate' menu command, being sure to click the 'axis only'
check box.

Mike, I'm new to this designing game and am presently working on my first
aircraft design. This A/C will have forward raked gear similar to the ME109.
My gear placement is far enough forward that I just can't retract outward into
the wing. I must first retract back to the vertical (perpendicular to the
wing) and then retract outward into the wing. Your SDL editor seems to be the
perfect program for this--however I'm stumped on the first thing to do--move
the FSDS part axis to the point of rotation.

While Louis has answered on the parts axis rotation, another possible way to
solve your motion, using AA, would be to use duplicate gear parts... the first
to retract to the vertical and disappear, and the second appears at the
vertical and retracts into the wing. You would play around with the motion
sequences in each case to get the desired angles of rotation.

Also, some aircraft, and I believe that Me109 rotated on an offset hinge/axis,
so the rotation is not on a single-alinged x-y-z plane

Then again, I think the rotation sequence for a Mig23 would give conniptions to
Mike's SDLEdit program..

thanks Louis, I looked all over the FSDS manual (it was probably there but I
missed it). This is just what I needed to know.

Louis, thanks for the help. I tried it out last night and found I could move
the part axix in the top window only. This meant I could move among different
"X" and "Z" points. I had to use translate to move the "Y" axis. Is it normal

to only move the axis in the top view only or do I need to reload FSDS? YOur
suggestion gave me the information I needed, now I'm just wondering if I
accidentally turned off some feature. Thanks again.

It sounds like you had constraints turned on. The three buttons labelled
'X' 'Y' and 'Z' with the red circle/line over them limit movement.
