Mike - I would suggest that before reading the mdl files, you open up some of
the many source files (both afx and fsc files) available from the flightsim.com
libraries, and at Freeflight Design Shop (http://www.freeflightdesign.com)

"Yes" you can open and read a model file with programs like mdlview, etc., but
it's a lot easier to open up the source file in either AF99 (for afx files) or
FSDS Pro (for afx and fsc files).

One word of warning, though, the afx import plug-in within FSDS Pro is not
"perfect" and results in flipped polygons, and depending on teh afx
component/structure, etc., you may have to tweak the parts to get the to smooth
out. However, there is something to be said to taking an afx and rebuilding it
in FSDS, actually using the afx parts as references.

I am a beginner designer wishing to learn the various techniques of building
aircraft for FS2K. I currently have Design Studio Pro and AF99, will be
purchasing AC Animator soon. Can anyone tell me what is needed to view/read an
aircraft's model file? I wish to be able to use some of the aircraft in my
collection as references to learn how certain things were done. Please help!
Thanks a bunch!
