My test system recently developed a SvcHost.exe virus. Just for the hell of it I went out on the internet and searched to see what was around that might be specific for this kind of thing.
As a result I came across yet another registry maintenance tool, this one called RegCure, which had a very interesting come-on which I will paraphrase as follows ... "SvcHost.exe infections can be nasty, so you really need RegCure to find the Bad Guy and fix it."
So okay, I risked $30, and guess what happened? Not only did RegCure not find/fix the problem, it damaged my registry.
Fortunately I am in the habit of making System Restore snapshots and I was able to roll back to the way things were before RegCure was installed.

Next I decided to try the legendary Kaspersky 7, in the form of the full-featured 30-day trial. I did a full scan of memory and the entire C drive, this test actually being more comphrehensive than the wonderful sounding "Kapersky rootkit scan". The result?
Kaspersky found nothing ... and the problem was still there.

So then I decided to fall back to Free AVG. The result? Free AVG reported finding something, it didn't say what, that it locked up in its nasty stuff vault ...
... and the SvcHost.exe problem has not been seen again.

I then forced Windows Update to do a complete reinstallation of every change/update. After that I reinstalled RegCure and put it head to head against my trusty Registry Repair.
The result?
RegCure found many fewer problems than did Registry Repair.
