Waaaaaaay too early to tell.

Yep, way to early to tell. Decisions like this usually depend on market conditions, such as how many people are still using each version of Windows. Though sometimes marketing people get involved and you have decisions like the one restricting Halo 2 to Vista when there is no technical need to.

Halo2 is DX10 only which makes it automatically Vista only.
So there is a technical reason.
That it also makes a lot of kids tell their parents they need to upgrade to Vista is a nice bonus.

And yes, FS11 (or whatever) if it is ever released, will almost certainly be a DX10 application and therefore Vista only.

Thanks guys: When thinking about a NEW computer, these "little things" can be significant down the road. This point in time has also got to make descision making.... problematic.

1.) Stay with XP or go with Vista...?

2.) Wait for "Penryn"and see how that works. I may be ignorent here, but I don't recall having seen anything about "Hardware" causing problems... like "Software" does. SPOFF

The only time hardware itself becomes a problem, usually anyways, is when a company drops support for new operating systems. One example being nVidia nForce 2 and 3 series motherboards. They quite likely still run just fine, but you can't get proper Vista drivers for them, especially not for the SoundStorm feature on some nForce boards.

Personally I wouldn't worry about what the next version of Windows will be compatible with as I doubt Microsoft even knows for sure. Does what you have now work for you? Are there any features of Vista that you need to have?

Nope, Halo is not a DX10 game, at least not as far the graphics go. People have found ways to trick it into running on XP. About the only problem is no multiplayer.

Spoff,

I'm certain that it won't be Vista only. I'm sure that it will be Windows Seven and Vista compatible. If you try to install it on xp, FS11 will probably have a popup notice that says, "FS11 is only compatible with Windows operating systems." Like when the Windows Update page claimed that my AMD Athlon computer running win98se was actually in fact a "Mac".

I'm kidding! But with regards to building a new computer, I think like an accountant, I try to minimize depreciation, and get the most bang for the buck. With regards to fs11, I think that hardware is going to be very important as to whether you can run it also. So it's an OS and hardware question. MS FS has always really stressed computer hardware when it comes out. So if it is coming out in 3(?) years, possibly the latest computers will have individual cores that are much faster than the latest cores we have now, and probably there will be as many as 32 cores (next year the Nehalem will have up to 8 processor cores, the next year I'm guessing 16 cores, and the next year 32 cores). So in 3 years the modern computer will eclipse the present computers. Many people right now are retiring their two year old computer, I think in three years it will be even more so.

I think that looking at cost versus value is a valid approach. If your present computer is a couple of years old and you really want a new rig, I would look into how you could do it and keep the costs down. I have been told that the new Penryn lower level processors w/ only two cores will come out surprisingly low priced, maybe around $300? That's a completely wild guess, we'll learn the actual retail price in a few weeks. $300 is a great price for such an advanced processor if you have to have one now. If it were me and I had xp, I'd keep xp for now, build the computer from scratch myself starting with the lower model Penryn processor. Even a low cost Penryn should deliver jaw dropping performance compared to a two year old computer. I think the Penryns will probably finally get a handle on trying to max FSX.

For FS11, I would definitely wait and see what the future technology has in store. Possibly in three years a 32 core computer might barely be able to run FS11, and might be optimized to run on Windows Seven. I wonder what features it will have?

It'll be Vista only. They're going to attempt to make eveyrone upgrade to Vista by mainly targetting the gaming industry. I doubt that it will affect many people though because it can be almsot guarenteed you can still play FSX.

Hi Milla,

Where did you read this, or whom from Microsoft told you this?

Or is this just your opinion, which you are entitled to?!!

spoff,

Check your private messages, I just sent you one.

jwenting,

Do you think that Earl Grey tea leaves perform better in obtaining insights, or maybe green tea w/ ginger? :)
