What is the cause of stutters and how do I cure them.
I get this even when my frames are in the high twenties and above.

I have the Nvidia 8800GTS 320mb and have mostly default settings in my control panel except for v sync which is forced on.
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual core proc.
2.41GHz, 2 GB Ram

I am starting to think it is the program its self. I continue to see people with better pc's getting the same FPS as me. I built my PC 2 years ago about the only place I cant fly with high settings is New York, Hong Kong ect.

Windows XP Home (32bit)
ASUS A8N-SLI
XFX Geforce 7800GT 256MB
AMD FX-55 2.6ghz
2GB Ram

I have not done any tweaks also. Anyone know a site or threads here with good tweaks?

Stutters are caused by the system loosing frames.
Most likely your videocard and CPU are good enough, but your motherboard is unable to pipe data between them fast enough.

Or your harddisk is slow and data needed by the CPU and videocard can't be read fast enough.

"Stutters are caused by the system loosing frames."

I agree, Foe what most people are calling "stutters" dropped frames are the cause.
Use the AverageFrameRate in one of your TextInfo sections to see dropped frames.

I increased my page file from the default of 2046 to 3069.
When I looked in the System Properties I found that it was set at 2046. So far the stutters seem to be gone. Maybe even some better frame rates.

I have 2gig of memory too, should I try the page file number of 3069 too? Im getting stuttering with my FS9 with my current system. When the stutters are not there, then its flying really smooth with frames locked at 30 What should be my min and max?

Thanks,

Bill

Hey,

HP sent me a new computer to swap the old one out becuase of issues that I won't get into here.

My "old" system had An Intel Quad Core Q6600@ 240 GHZ and a Nvidea 8500GT with 512 of ram. On that machine, I was getting 20fps on FSX and 30 fps on FS9 with the sliders on 75%.

My new machine has the same chip and the same memory but with a 8600 GT Nvidea and 512 of ram. I am getting 50fps on FS9 and 15 fps on FSX with the sliders at the same position. On FSX, If I take off from KORD, my fps are about 7, till I get up in the sky.

I only had SP1 installed on the first one. My new pc, I installed FSX fresh and then SP1, and SP2. Then I installed all of my addons. I was really expecting something dramatic.

I won't say that the motion is fluid, but the stuttering is acceptable. I know that if I was running FS9 on final at those fps I would end up in the grass!

Oh yes, I am running Vista Home premium 32 bits on both setups.

How is that for something to think about?

Right click on My Computer.
Click Properties
Click Advanced then click Settings
Click Advanced again
Look at Virtual Memory, click Change.

Reset the maximum page file size to whatever it says is maximum
for you computer. You will see a difference in performance.

So for 2GB of RAM, it should be 3069 as Initial and 9207 for Maximum?

Just set it to 4095 for min and max, and then use something like PerfectDisk to defrag both the page file and the master file table. The 4095 becomes the amount of virtual -- i.e. apparent -- memory that becomes available for running applications. How much of that virtual memory gets implemented in physical RAM as opposed to residing on disk is a function of both the amount of RAM and the tactical state of the OS.

There is a freeware program called PageDefrag that does a kinda-sorta defrag of the page file, but it does nothing about $MFT or any of the other similar system files.

OK, thanks. Where does the figure 4095 come from?

It's the largest number that Windows will accept. Yes, this means that 4 GB of disk space will be reserved for the pagefile.

To report back about my original question, as I said, I increased my page file and the stutters were gone.
Just in case it was a one shot thing, I have spent a couple of days just trying to get it to stutter again. I AM getting better frames and no stutters. I'm sure one of you pc gurus out there can explain why better then me.
It works guys, give it a shot.
