Finally! I've poured over every forum I could find and nothing. I've seen many people having the same error message with no solution yet posted. Well here it is for sure! If you are having the following error.

Then your solution is this. download and install the directx sdk.
Here is the link.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/xna/aa937788.aspx

It's the one that says DirectX SDK-June 2007

This will absolutely fix this error.

If you are getting multiple errors on starting up GMAX after installing the FSXsdk and the FSX_gmax shortcut won't start up GMAX, then you have installed it in the wrong place. In the sdk, copy the ENTIRE folder named "FSX_GmaxGamePack" (not just the files inside, but the whole folder), and paste it into the "gamepacks" folder in the main gmax directory. Open up gmax with the regular gmax shortcut and go to "customize"/"configure paths" and
select the "plugins" tab and then set the path to gamepacks/FSX_GMAXGamepack/plugins. Now it will work! From now on, use the new shortcut (fsx_gmax)

Hope this helps all of you who were about to give up (or have given up)

Happy modeling!!
John
P.S. please post this on other flightsim sites. I've been to many forums that had no solution, but I can't remember what they were. Also I'm having problems logging into the Avsim forums. Thanks.

Now that I've solved that problem, could somebody please walk me thru how to turn my mdl files into a bgl. Also, will bglcomp export gmax animations ?
This is like learning everything all over again..atleast they're still using gmax so I don't have to learn a new design tool!
