I had my doubts about the new Intel CPU, but it overclocks so easily and very stable. I'm at 3.6GHz on air cooled only (Zalman).

Comparing the QX9650 @ 3.6GHz (FSB @ 1600Mhz) to my older X6800 @ 3.2GHz - I'm seeing about 90% improvement in frame rates using the QX9650.

The blurries are still there and view changes still tend to make the blurries remain but they do eventually clear to the max LOD radius (which is still way too small IMHO).

Preliminary tests:

DX10 Preview mode
Max ALL scenery values except auto gen = none
1920 x 1080 AA and AF
Traffic, Boats etc all set to 20
Weather = Fair
Time = 1pm
Location = SFO
3D cockpit, zoom .50
aircraft = 172 Cessna
taxi fps from left window looking at terminals = 21 fps low
airborne averages 38 fps

It would seem FSX likes fast CPUs and more of them, the quad core really made a difference. Still the occassional stutter but considerably smoother.

This is a base FSX Install with SP1 then Acceleration, no other add-ons.

So maybe Intel's next gen CPU (Nehalem) and nVidia's next GPU (9800GTX Ultra) will let me turn on AutoGen and turn up Traffic and I hope someone comes out with a solution to the 2X AA limitation.

On a side note, I've got the QX9650 running at 4Ghz without a problem (on air cooling) but I'm playing it safe at 3.6GHz. I'm sure a TEC cooling solution could get this CPU at 5GHz no problem.
