Here is a video of professional pilots trying to land in strong winds. So don't feel bad when your sim plane reacts the same way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISOI91-Xmog

I saw some of those before. They are frightening.

I saw one a while back, which is not shown here, and it was just amazing how the pilot got the aircraft down. I think is was in Hong Knog, and it was a 747. Good thing the rudder stayed on. lol

Were they not taught how to slip?

With all due respect, landing in crosswinds as severe as the ones that appear in that video is one of the most challenging things a pilot can encounter. And let's face, of course they were taught how to slip. However, as this article on slip landings illustrates:

"Because slips are uncomfortable for passengers and can increase the risk of the plane entering a spin, slips are generally not used for the entire descent. Pilots usually advocate a combination of the slip landing and crab landing techniques for the smoothest possible landings."

Be more charitable to our brothers flying the real thing! :)

Respectfully,
Scott

One of the best things about the video was the number of people who broke off and went around rather the pushing it to try and land.

The Boeing crosswind component verification tests were quite exciting.

Of all the videos' about 80% were excellent pilot skill and judgement, including the missed approaches.
